Sizzling Start…
Richmond, Ontario (May 28, 2018)
Round 1 of the Rockstar Triple Crown MX portion kicked off in Calgary this past weekend. One of the most anticipated races of the year, as new teams, new contenders and the air of the unknown bring the anticipation of what the next 9 rounds of outdoor racing will bring. Once again, our program served notice that the homework had been done in the offseason and we were going to be a threat from the first gate drop of the year. The team has captured 7 out of the last 8 moto wins and 3 or 4 overalls at the opening round of outdoors over the past 4 years. This year it would be the #15 of Jess Pettis that would throw the first punches with a commanding 1-1 performance and have the honour of leaving with the coveted red plate (for the first time in his career). His Royal Distributing / FXR / Yamaha teammates had great days as well with Marco Cannella battling all moto long for the final podium spot in moto 1. A small mistake would relegate him to 5th as the checkers flew. Hayden Halstead showing early on that his offseason was well spent after qualifying a career high in 6th overall that the speed is there. A tip over while making the pass for 7th would cost him 2 spots for a finish of 9th to open the year.
Moto 2 would see Halstead earn his first career Royal Distributing hole shot with Pettis right in tow. Unfortunately, the start was not so kind to the 3rd member Cannella as he would find himself on the ground in the first turn and remounting in last place. He proved his mental toughness as he charged all moto long to climb as high as 8th. Pettis would pass for the lead and never look back as he won both motos by 10 secs. Halstead maybe a little anxious running up front had an off-track excursion that ended in some banners and a pitstop to remove the signage and stakes would drop him all the way to 19th. Back on track he would make passes each lap crossing the line for 11th. Cementing all 3 bLUcRU riders in the top 10 overall for the day.
Jess Pettis 1-1 1st overall
Marco Cannella 5-8 6th overall
Hayden Halstead 9-11 9th overall
The team now prepares it self for the newest stop in Popkum BC just outside of Vancouver for rd 2 this coming weekend.
