Interview with Kyle Beaton By Gauldy Photos by Gauldy Kyle Beaton just signed a deal that now finalizes details for his 2010 MX season with Blackfoot Yamaha Red Bull Fox racing team. I know there was a press release a couple weeks back but he was just in Calgary yesterday making it concrete. I got a chance to spend the last weeks or so with the Beats in his home surroundings. It was plain and simply awesome. We had a great time, and I now see why Beats is a fan favourite when he rides or just hangs out. I also got to watch him at his best, and that’s when he is in Chilliwack. He won four main events in the past two weeks, and leads the Open and MX2 classes. I gave him a shout to catch up with him on the last 10 days of his life.

Beats is on top right now. Gauldy – Yo Beats, what’s up, where y’at?
Beaton – I am just sitting in the airport waiting for a plane to go back to BC. The flight is delayed right now. Gauldy – What were you doing there? Beaton – Just finalizing all the plans for the 2010 year of racing. I am super pumped to be back with the team, and we had a really good weekend. It’s going to be a good year. I’m looking forward to it. Hopefully I’ll start the season off like how last year ended. Gauldy – Just quickly give me your thoughts on 2009? Beaton – On paper it didn’t go that well. I felt I rode really well by the end of the year. It was just a shame that it started the way it did. I learned a lot though, for sure. I have always done it on my own, and maybe things didn’t mesh that well sometimes with the team. I know I can win and they do too; that’s why I’m back. I believe and so do they. I’m really happy to get a second chance. Gauldy – Good answer budds. Now to the present; we are 4 rounds deep into the NEX Trax AX championship and you are in the lead in both classes. Give me your perspective on the last two weeks? Beaton – It went really well. I have always enjoyed the series and it has helped me a lot with my riding. It is so aggressive in that barn. My worst finish was a second except for that docking incident at round 1. Other than that, I have been really consistent and that is a bit of a change for me. Gauldy – How about the competition this year? You guys were saying this is the biggest turnout for Pros ever. They say the economy is tough right now, but I guess no one told the BC racers. Beaton – Ya, it has been awesome so far. We have a lot of young kids that are Pro now and they are riding well. Then you have guys like me, Klatt, Coutts, Foster and Hoyer, along with Nye and Seibler. It has been the best racing ever and I am stoked to be on top of it all. We have never really had to run qualifiers. It was always just for gate pick. The series deserves it and so do the fans.
Kyle Beaton has a gift when the gate drops. He always comes out smelling like roses Gauldy – It’s always better when there are more Pros racing. How about the tracks and the pits for atmosphere? I think you BC guys are spoiled out there with this series. It was awesome for me to be a part of it for the first two weeks. Beaton – The Hellams do a pretty good job. I have been helping build the tracks for a couple years so I see it differently than other riders. The tracks were easy for the Pros, but it is understandable because they have amateurs too. Not everyone can handle the tight racing. It’s not all about the Pros. Gauldy – Did you just say that it is not all about the Pros? Beaton – Yes Gauldy – You almost sound like a human there instead of some dumb rockstar Pro who only thinks for himself. Beaton – Well, I have my grade 12. Hahahahahahah Gauldy – Awesome answer. I just spent 10 days with ya, and I have to say you’re a cool dude. You have a great house with your family, good friends and you enjoy life instead of being all stiff and serious. How do you do that? You see kids like Knowles and Lepp just so frustrated, and you just cruise around even if it’s not perfect. Beaton – I was in those kids shoes not that long ago. I know that it us tough for a young kid. Life is too short, and this sport is too much fun to have it beat you down mentally. I surround myself with good people and I have a good time. If you’re having a good time you’re riding well. That’s the way I’m trying to look at things right now.
Beats worst finish has been a 2nd so far in the four mains. He did how ever get docked in the Saturday MX2 main of round 2 when he and Hoyer jumped the gate. Gauldy – We are four rounds in and you’re leading both classes. How’s that make you feel? Beaton – Frickin’ awesome Gauldy!! Gauldy – Dusty Klatt showed up on the weekend. Were you surprised about his speed considering he hasn’t ridden that much? Beaton – It was weird that in the MX2 main I owned him then in the Open main he owned me. I’m never surprised at his speed. Dusty is an awesome rider and always brings his A game. In the Open main it seemed he was only able to get a good start in that class. He came on strong in the Open, which was kind of weird. But so far I have won all the MX2 mains and I have to keep that going. Gauldy – Why do you think Dusty is so quiet? Beaton – I don’t know. I could ask you why you are so loud. Gauldy - Good comeback. So what’s up for the next while for you? Beaton – I head to England on Tuesday, and I am pumped for that. The crowds are crazy over there, and the fans love us coming into town. It gets pretty crazy over there. Then the next round of Chilliwack is on December 19th and I will be looking to extend my point gap heading into the holidays. Gauldy – The last 10 days we had a great time. What is the most memorable thing that happened during the last 10 days? Beaton – I’m not sure, there were a few. I’ll just hang on to them. Gauldy – Good call budds. Let’s wrap this up then. Who do you want to give thanks to? Beaton – Blackfoot Motosports, Yamaha, Fox, Red Bull, Oakley, SSS Suspension, DR D, Michelin, my folks for all their support, and you Gauldy for the last few days cause we had great times for sure, all my fans, and Ed at Clearbrook Yamaha for supporting me no matter what. |
