Some more great shots from the past.
Al Dyck (1992) Al Dyck was an awesome rider in the mid-‘80s to early ‘90s. He was one of very few to put a stop to the reign of Ross Pederson. This is a great shot of Al at the 1992 Molson Park National in Barrie, Ontario.
Blair Sharpless (Not sure what year) I know John Nelson of Machine Racing will know what year this is. The picture is of Blair Sharpless at the end of Day 4 of the ISDE as he installs a new rear tire while Kiempe Van Dyke examines the bike for damage.
Brad Lockhart #8 (1992) Brad Lockhart used to be one fast cookie. Here he is holeshotting the 250 Pro class at the very first Walton Grand National in 1992. Brad is now a respected shop owner in Tillsonburg, Ontario. http://www.lockhartsodyssey.ca/
Cal Nowicki (1989 or 1990) A super fast kid from Alberta back in the day. Cal Nowicki had all the skill to make it in the Pro class but never managed to move forward with his career. I remember in 1991 as an Intermediate rider at Westlock, Alberta for the CMA Amateur Nationals, he won both classes and won two brand new 1992 YZs for his efforts.
Jeff Surwall (1992) One of the coolest guys you’d ever meet in the sport is Jeff Surwall. An American from Chicago found a home with Machine Racing for many years in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. He was the holeshot master on his Hondas. In this picture, he may have had the holeshot, but took the wrong line. Jeff is now the man behind No Fear USA.
L Lashway (1992) I think his first name was Lance but I am not sure. This picture is from the 1992 CMA Amateur Nationals in La Tuque, Quebec. The Lashway brothers (there were 2) were fast and had the coolest sponsor that year. Look at the front fender, that's right, they were sponsored by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This Lashway brother would win the 125 Intermediate class that year.
Matt Lee (1991) This is Matt Lee when he was fast as hell on an 80. Matt probably had the most skill of the Lee family in motocross, but he also shared the same Lee curse they all had: Hitting the ground hard and often. Matt made his way through the ranks to Pro but his injuries always held him back. Today he is a great teacher to many riders and helps build all the national tracks for the CMRC.

Chuck Mesley (1993) Likely one of the most spectacular riders of his time, Chuck Mesley was and is always wide open on a dirt bike. You could talk this kid into jumping anything. He has tamed it down in his older years, but he still has some skill. Chuck won both Ontario Pro Provincial class championships in 2009.
Paul Delaurier (1991) I think A fast rider from eastern Ontario, Paul Delaurier was just another good guy that raced bikes. He has gone on to be one of the best mechanics in the US working for such riders as Mike Alessi, Mike Larocco, and Chad Reed, and today helps out the San Manuel Yamaha team that supports James Stewart.
Rob Bourque (1996) Rob Bourque was always known as the guy that had the best looking bikes. He was also pretty fast when he wanted to be. He would be the first to tell you that he never took racing serious enough, but he had a lot of good memories. He now has a great family and was recently a test rider for MXP.
Start (1995) This was 1995 at the Walton Trans Can Pro National. There are a ton of big names in this picture. How many can you name? Hint: There are four champions in this picture, an announcer, an x mechanic, a guy that works for DMX, and a Canadian SX star. Can you name them? |
