Fergus Falls January 23 2010 Race Report

Fergus Falls January 23 2010 Race Report
Matt Wellumson

Minnesota, like many other places in the north, is a unique space in which to exist as a Motocross rider, or fan. Our climate is not exactly the talk of the globe, however, we have hundreds, if not thousands of people obsessed with this sport. Riders are always working to find new ways to enjoy it, and will travel for hundreds of miles to get a few laps in. With indoor tracks being somewhat new for Amateur level riding, many of us are waking up to the fact that riding year round is an absolute possibility.

Again for 2010, Motokazie is hosting their indoor Motocross series in Fergus Falls, a small town located in northern Minnesota. This location is far enough Northeast to attract a host of riders from Canada, as well as North and South Dakota. This makes for some unique racing, similar to national events, as many of these riders have never shared a track with each other, nor do they have any personal experience racing their weekend's competition. Racing took place on both Saturday January 23rd, and Sunday January 24th, making it a full weekend for those who wanted to participate.

The first track for 2009 had unique challenges for all levels of racing, with 3 triple jumps, deep sand corner, and a step-on-step-off that also acted as a quad jump for fast enough riders who dared to try it. The only downside to this event was the weather. Freezing rain, and snow dominated the weekend, making roads dangerous to drive. Not a problem for most hearty northerners, as it added just a few more minutes to their drive from Fergus falls to Red Horse Ranch Arena.

This track had many riders hailing from all over the upper midwest, as well as Canada. Obviously the event was dominated by Minnesota riders, since it was a home state for many of them, what was surprising was the Canadian domination at this event. While there was quite a few people doing well on the track from Wisconsin and from the Dakota's, Canadian riders had the most podium positions (among non Minnesotans) with 250c, 85cc 7-11, 85cc 9-12, Supermini, and 30+ B being dominated by Canadian riders taking control of 1st.

Two of the best riders to watch from Canada consisted of 85cc / supermini rider Richard Morin of St Malo Manitoba (26) , and Jordan Devloo (60) of Cypress River Manitoba. Richard was able to clinch the lead in both Supermini, and more impressively leading the pack in 250C, on his KTM 105! Morin's hole shots were amazing, out powering many larger four, and two stroke pilots to the first corner. Along with his holeshots, Morin was also able to fly through the sand corner with a confidence that was lacking in many other riders in faster classes.

Jordan Devloo has always been a formidable presence on the Fergus track, as his aggressive riding style and overall speed make for some interesting racing to watch. Devloo may not have taken 1st in all his races, but he was up against some fast kids, and showed impressive skills for his size and age. Both of these riders were the underdog for their respective classes by being the smallest in physical size, and in the case of Morin in 250c, the smallest bike on the track.

For further info on this event please see the results, and check out the captioned photos showcasing some of the riders who participated in this event! Further racing is set to continue during the weekend of February 20 - 21, with open practice the evening of the 19th for those who can get there early enough.

#58 Justin Gevoga out of Gimli Manitoba was really interesting to watch over this jump. I am not sure how strict he practices riding on his own time, but it was a carbon copy every time, and showing some style that others in 250c simply couldn't match. Definitely some potential for some speed here.

#269 Mike Will of Jordan Minnesota, arguably had the loudest gear at this event, which may have blinded his competition, granting him 1st overall in both 250, and 450 C .

#263 Brady Richardson of Sanford Manitoba was one of the many riders who made the trip down to Minnesota from Manitoba, for some good racing action! While he may not have had as great a night as others in C class, he did end the night finishing 1st in 250 C consi !

#289 Blaze Best (yes that is his real name) ended up being the overall winner of 85cc 9-12, and 2nd overall in Supermini. Blaze hails from Orono Minnesota.

#85 Trevor Archibald showing some good form while hitting the longer back double.

#60 Jordan Devloo out of Cypress River Manitoba during his 85cc 9-12 race. Jordan's aggressive style granted him two firsts in this class, and 3rd overall in Supermini

#473 Cody Slark out of Chaska MN throwing up some roost on a final corner before the whoops section. Cody went on to win 450B with two firsts, on his 2010 Honda that was once ridden by Geico Powersport Honda member, Blake Wharton.

#308 Nick Jackson out of Zumbrota MN went on to dominate both 250 and 450A during the nights racing.

#111 Josh Shiskoski of Winkler Manitoba took 3rd overall in both 250 and 450A. Josh was a very consistent rider, having better hole shots than many expected, and held his lines well proving difficult pass.

#26 Richmond Morin of St.Malo Manitoba hitting one of my favorite jumps (both as a rider and photographer) at this track. Richard went on to dominate 250C, and Supermini during this event. Not bad considering he was riding his 105 for both classes!
