With the summer fast approaching, I’m going to try and keep this blog updated a lot more frequently. This year I’ll be driving to the entire series so I’m looking forward to sharing all sorts of photography snippets from my “Life on the Road” like the blog title states. I can’t wait.

First up, with the opening round of the Canadian Motocross Nationals only a couple days away, it means it’s the time of year for last minute photo shoots. Every year, my email starts blowing up in the weeks before the first race with requests to squeeze in last minute shoots. In Canadian moto, things tend to come together fairly late and there’s always graphics and gear showing up last minute so it tends to make for a hectic week leading into Round One. Throw in the unpredictable BC weather and it can make for a stressful time.

The week started off by making the six hour drive up north to Williams Lake to shoot some photos with my good buddy, Brock Hoyer. This trip wasn’t a commission – I offered to come up and shoot the photos if he covered my travel expenses. Brock’s one of my closest moto friends so I try to help him out in anyway I can. Plus, I wanted to squeeze some camping in on the way back in the Caribou region where Brock lives.

Packing the Elantra to the roof, myself and my girlfriend made the drive up to Williams Lake. Unfortunately, but sadly typical for Canadian moto, Brock’s new gear never showed up so we ended up being unable to shoot any action photos. It was definitely a downer to travel 12 hours, round trip and not shoot the thing you came there to shoot but we still got some cool static shots of the bike and portraits with Brock and it was fun just to do the road trip and hang out with good friends.

He didn’t have his new gear but Brock did a few wheelies along this massive cliff where we were shooting, near Williams Lake.

Getting back home Tues evening, it was time to charge the batteries and get ready for another shoot, this time with the Cycle North team on Wednesday. I’d been keeping an eye on the weather all week and it wasn’t looking good. After tossing around the idea of just doing some cool portrait type shots in the area, we finally settled on making a blast up to Kamloops to try and find some dryer weather, so back everything went into the car and off to make the three hour drive back north again. The weather wasn’t much better but luckily we found enough of a window between showers to squeeze in some shots.

With the shots in the bag and the rain falling again, it was time to load back up and make the drive back to the coast. I got home at midnight, edited the selects, caught some sleep and now I’m repacking to hit the ferry tomorrow for Nanaimo. Time to get this season underway!

Setting up to shoot the bikes. It was so windy that I couldn’t use any light modifiers over the flashes and eventually the back light blew over anyways. Hard day on equipment.
