Yamaha Motor Canada’s Wednesday Amateur Profile- Zach Chauvin

yamaha logo - low resFor this week’s Yamaha Motor Canada Amateur Profile we travel to Southwestern Ontario and catch up with hard working Zach Chauvin. This nine-year-old 85cc rider from Tilbury, Ontario loves to do everything from playing hockey to CrossFit. This season Zach hopes to spend time getting used to his brand new YZ85 before competing in the 2015 Parts Canada TransCan. Let’s take a look at another one of Canada’s rising stars.

MXP: Hey Zach, how are you? Can we start off by you giving us your age and where your hometown is located?

ZC: I’m good Chris, thanks for calling. I am nine-years-old and I live in Tilbury, Ontario

How long have you lived there?

I have lived in Tilbury since I was born, so 9 years.

What class do you ride and how long have you been riding?

I started riding when I was 4-years-old and racing when I was 6. I am riding in the 65 7-9 class and will be starting to ride my new 2015 Yamaha YZ85 in the 85cc 9-11 class. I hope to spend some time racing at some local races and then working my way up to race at Walton later this year. So far I feel very comfortable on it and I love riding the 85cc, so I think I should be able to race it at Walton.

Armed with a brand new YZ85, Zach hopes to have a safe and successful in 2015.

What did you do during the off-season to prepare for the 2015 racing season and riding your new bike?

I play hockey a couple times a week, and then on the days I don’t play hockey I do Crossfit training at Performance Fitness 3 to 4 times per week to help with my core strength and endurance. I pretty much do something physical every day so I do feel very prepared for this season.

Sounds like you have some very good training habits for a 9-year-old. Can you take us through some of your past racing highlights?

Sure, I finished in the top five last year at Walton in the 50cc Open class as well as third overall in the TVR 65 Expert class for both the Summer & Fall series. I also was able to get to the Loretta Lynn’s Mid-east Regionals last year, which is a tough region.

That sounds like a great season Zach. Have you found a track yet that you’d call your favourite?

My favorite track is the Insanity Track at the Jimmy Weinart Training Facility (JWTF) in North Carolina. We spent two weeks there back in March during spring break and I can’t wait to go back!

What are your goals for the 2015 season?

My biggest goal is just to stay healthy and have fun racing my dirt bike, but I would like to see myself make the top five in the 65 7-9 class this year at Walton. I would also like to be able to qualify for at least two Loretta Lynn’s Regionals this year.

Those sound like some really good goals. What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given so far in racing and who gave it to you?

Most importantly to have fun riding dirt bikes, then to worry about being consistent over being fast; basically style before speed. If you have the right style then the speed will come naturally. I get that advice from my trainers and my Mom and Dad.

MXP: That sounds like exactly what I tell parents and kids. Do you like music? What is your favourite music?

I like all sorts of music on my iPod but mostly rock stuff. I really like Maroon 5, Bruno Mars and AC/DC, but also heavier stuff to get me pumped up during my workouts like Metallica and Godsmack.

What are you usually thinking about while the thirty second board is up?

To be honest I’m usually pretty nervous. I try to focus on my breathing to keep my heart from pounding too much. I lock my eyes on the first corner and picture in my head getting around that first turn before everyone else.

With his smooth style and strong work ethic, Zach should find himself on the top step of the podium very soon.

When I was nine-years-old that is exactly what I was like before the start of each race. What is your video game of choice?

Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare.

Does everyone at your school know you race dirt bikes?

Most kids know that I ride a dirt bike but I don’t think that most know how far that I travel with racing, except for a few close friends.

What is your favourite subject at school?

My Dad is a web developer so we have always had a lot of computers around the house since I was little. So I definitely love computer class at school and then probably math class.

You sound like a pretty smart kid Zach. What is your favourite thing to do other than ride a dirt bike?

That would be hockey and playing on my iPod.

Okay Zach, thank you for doing this. Here is your final question. Who would you like to thank?

I would like to thank my Mom & Dad, Rob from SPH Motorsports for all my awesome FOX gear, Tilbury Auto Sales & RV, Yamaha for my new, sweet YZ85, Jay from DPM Insurance, Chris from Cobra Minicycles Canada, Fusion Graphix,, Mediateknix for building me a nice website, CORE Motorsports & Forma boots and Aaron Wilcox for always helping my Dad with my bikes.
