My Passion for Motocross
By: Daryl Murphy April 17, 2020
In the sport of motocross there is this fire within most all of us that is indisputable, undeniable, and universally known as passion. My passion towards Saskatchewan motocross is like an intense adrenaline-filled desire to be a part of something close to home that I feel can have a positive impact in a person’s life and their family’s lives. These impacts are things I grew up learning: A strong work ethic, how to conduct oneself with integrity and fairness, respect for all age groups, and how spending this time with family and friends are some of the most cherished moments in life. A passion to share these learnings with others while supporting the province to deliver not only a valuable experience both on and off the motorcycle but to also grow the sport for the future, is an evident fire I feel within me.
On a national level, motocross in Canada means the world to me. Motocross is a world which encompasses all the good things in life for me, the absence of which I would find myself truly lost inside. By travelling together to national races, sharing stories or enjoying annual meals together such as a lobster feast that is a must do in New Brunswick, one can gain a real sense of community, family and friends off the track. While on the track, one can genuinely see and feel the heart and commitment, desire, discipline, and focus that the athletes have along with their supporters and the event staff. Traveling coast to coast as part of the event staff on the national circuit has given me not only the opportunity to support the sport, but to learn and grow from others’ experiences, while enjoying the significant impact it has made on my life. Canadian motocross is where I have gained more family to love and cherish, and without a shadow of a doubt, I would feel less connected and lost in the world without them.
One positive thing I have learned over the years working in the Saskatchewan region and being involved in the national series is how important collaboration with others is towards the growth of the sport. My hope and vision for the future of the sport of motocross in Canada is to see strong relationship building with all regions across this country. Working alongside our national partners and neighboring provinces like Alberta/Saskatchewan or Manitoba/Saskatchewan, for example, can be tremendously valuable. While each province promotes and runs events slightly different than their next-door neighbours, there is so much that we can learn from one another when we are willing to incorporate great ideas and implement best practices, all while maintaining our own province’s deeply engrained core values. We need to be open to listening to others and to pushing the envelope in terms of being innovative by having a voice and boldly sharing our unique ideas. I envision successful collaboration between national and interprovincial stakeholders to be one of the key elements that will ensure the success and growth of motocross well into the future.
The most important thing I can do to help grow the sport is to continue supporting motocross to the greatest degree possible within the roles I hold within the motocross community. Although I have recently stepped down from my position within the Saskatchewan region, it has not stopped me from supporting in other ways. In 2019, the “MurphMX” amateur motocross team in Saskatchewan was formed. The team is something that keeps this fire burning inside me. It is a way to help provide riders an avenue to showcase not only themselves but also the sport as a whole and our sponsors. Additionally, it is a way to inspire others, especially potential or relatively new riders. One must have good sportsmanship and a good attitude, along with a sincere willingness to get involved while promoting the sport and sponsors. Getting involved in the greater community is another imperative that the team will be taking on in 2020 and will no doubt be something we can build on, and ultimately demonstrate what it means to be involved in our great community and sport of motocross.
Much Love in Racing & Sport
