Kyle lined up for most of the Eastern rounds the past two seasons with mixed results that were highlighted by a brilliant performance at Gopher Dunes in 2013 where he finished an impressive 2nd overall. The 2013 race was Kyle’s first national effort since his horrific femur break at Whispering Pines in Kamloops in 2012, which I had the misfortune of witnessing first hand. That season, Kyle’s program was on point and I truly believe that he will harness the fuel of that misfortune and everything else in his corner to add to what he has worked for to take one more shot at bettering his career high national number of 4. How can one not to be a fan of someone who puts in so much effort in the face of adversity. Those who have faced it know that if there is no blueprint for such a thing, but I believe the scroll Kyle and his connections are drafting for 2015 will be as good a recipe as any. Good luck Kyle, and sorry Ryan Lockhart, I believe this means you are no longer a member of the ‘Dream Team.’
Before I dive into the heated on-track action of this past weekend, I would like to speak a few words about Mike Alessi and send a well wish his way on his current situation. Mike has been on point so far and in my opinion has showed us a gear in his Supercross arsenal this year that has yet to be seen. Mike, with a solid ninth at round one and a stellar heat race win this past weekend at A-2, suffered a knee injury very early in the main event on Saturday night.

According to Tony, who I spoke with on Wednesday, stated that Mike was shuffled back early in the moto and tweaked his knee after making contact with another rider. He pressed on with determination and moved from 18th to 10th but had to pull off, succumbing to the intense pain that was unbearable by mid-moto. Mike flew to New York to have the knee evaluated. I was told he has damage between the joint, but is electing to press on and is a race day decision for this weekend and each ensuing weekend. Tony did say that Vince Friese has been pencilled in on the Moto Concepts 450 in case Mike is unable to go in Northern California Saturday. I queried Tony on the prospect of Mike’s return to Canada and asked him point blank what it would take to make it happen. Tony responded that they would love to come back to Canada and he cited in the response that Mike’s resurgence and success in Supercross was a direct result of getting some much needed confidence building success this side of the border last summer.
He did add that they are comfortable on Suzuki and it is their bike of choice as they feel it is the best bike for their program on the market. I could not argue with Tony when he stated that backing from that manufacturer for them to come back to this country would be necessary and a huge benefit to all of those that have a vested interest in Suzuki. I know if I owned a Suzuki dealership I would be campaigning anyone and everyone who has the power to make this happen. We have seen so many positives and improvements in Canadian moto the past few seasons. Derek Schuster’s program at Gopher Dunes has Honda Canada making a huge comeback and I am sure those that sell that brand would agree. In my opinion, to have Suzuki Canada back in the game at the top level would be a huge victory for the brand, and more importantly, what us race fans look forward to and value most, which is the best racing possible. I guess we will have to wait to see.
The Reed/Canard incident is all that everyone has talked about all week. I wonder if we’ll start seeing black flags now every weekend? Photo by Frank Hoppen
Last weekend’s headlines of the Chad Reed/ Trey Canard incident is by now yesterday’s news and I am sure both parties, okay I will lump the AMA in there too, or all three parties are looking to move forward, wherever that is. Trey Canard and Chad Reed are both professionals who have dedicated their lives and countless hours to their sole vocation and love of Motocross. They, like many of us that are afflicted with this passion at the end of the day, are still just human beings with human emotions and we all make mistakes. Yes, in their case, there are sponsors to appease and a fan base to be endeared to as well as rules that have to be abided by; consequences have to be faced but the show goes on. So like any rider, racer or individual coming back from any type of adversity, I am most curious to see which of these two riders takes the most out of this incident in a positive direction. Both Reed’s and Canard’s results have been below par by their own standards and those supporting them. Fortunately, neither was injured and will line up this weekend in a quest to get going in a direction that has them and their connections smiling. I am very much looking forward to bringing you next week’s ‘Friday Flight’ from the pits at A-3 as I am headed out into the field to spend three weeks in California enjoying the Supercross action first hand.
Until next Friday’s Flight, I am Brent ‘Airmail’ Worrall…out.
