Well friends once we prepare to launch into another weekend of great racing action of what has been an action packed Monster Energy Supercross series. For myself a point in the series and a reprieve from our Canadian winter that I have looked forward to since the conclusion of the Future West Arenacross series. My wife and I have packed up the Moto Show bus and as I am typing this and happy to announce that I can see the battleground for round 5 of this great series from my hotel room window. I have yet to see the track up close and personal but I promise you once I have finished this road trip edition of ‘Friday Flight’ I will be heading to the stadium.

After a long drive from BC we finally made it to Angel Stadium.

I know I may seem to some like a broken record when it comes to repeatedly stating what this sport and the connection to its great people does for the soul but I would hate to think where I would be or what I would be doing if I was not chasing my passion. I guess it is not really a chase but more like being in tow as the magnetic pull of the vortex of this sports goodness that is locked on my inner being or hardware and has me along for the ride smiling like a kid at the amusement park. The first leg of my journey south would take me to Vancouver Island where a visit with my ailing father n’ law was in order and I only mention this as I want to shout some love to my Vancouver Island Moto brethren, they know who they are. I had everything methodically planned, hospital visit on Saturday and checked into a hotel that had ‘Shaw’ cable the only Canadian provider to carry the ‘Speed’ channel only to realize that when I tried to tune into the channel that they only had a basic cable package which did not include Speed.’ After making a quick social media post on my Canadian Moto Show Facebook page I had offers within the hour. As I said big thanks to my good friends from the Vancouver Island you guys are amazing and your passion and commitment to the sport is top shelf.

I am pretty amped up for the next couple of weeks as I will be hanging with my MXP colleague Chris Pomeroy this weekend who will have some great stories up here on the site following his experiences this weekend. I will be then carrying the MXP road trip to torch to San Diego to cover next weekend’s race there. I have also been in contact with many Canadians who have made the trek down to get some seat time in weather which is at 23 degrees as I type, not rubbing it in, okay maybe a little. I spoke with Todd Minnie who will wear the big number 57 this year on the Leading Edge Motorsports Kawasaki when the gate drops on round one of the Rockstar Nationals in Kamloops. He was spinning laps at Milestone yesterday with the likes of Belgian rider Clement DeSalle. Minnie who is teamed up with Kyle Liebart were understandably pumped and I look forward to hitting up some of the practice facility with them and others this week as you never know who or what you might see.

Walking around the pits on press day I was like a kid at Disneyland.

Before I head over to Angel Stadium I want to shed some light on where I left last week’s ‘Friday Flight’ and that of course was with the question of which of either Chad Reed or Trey Canard would harness the most of the incident which had the industry a buzz. A sensationalized version of the incidents would read something like, Trey Canard’s offering to Chad Reed of some kind of a drain plug lap dance which had Reed reciprocating in a way that only Gordie Howe fans of yesteryear would deem sportsmanlike, right? Whatever your version mine is quite simply put, it’s racing it happens. Let’s keep things in perspective as these are fierce competitors and I truly believe none of their actions were pre-mediated or at least any part of a master plan to see the re-bound efforts we saw in Northern California. Were you surprised? I am not surprised in the least that Canard got the victory as the top step is where many had him pegged, to win races and possibly the title. Chad Reed on the other hand I guess you could call it a surprise, at least for me it was as Chad has yet to show anything that would warrant me picking him for a win let alone a podium. Being a race fan, I am just that a fan of racing and not so much individual riders. I have been around this sport a long time and seen a lot, it never grows old to watch a rider overcome adversity like only a true motocrosser can and get their revenge on the score sheet. Now who can back it up this weekend?

It seems heading into each weekend of this seasons big bike action the list of questions increases, here’s my short list. Will Ken Roczen put his blunder behind him and regain that early moto speed that seems to separate riders in this class? Eli Tomac, can he rebound and run up front? The points leader Ryan Dungey can he push to that next level and prove to not only his critics but himself that he can win outright? Davi Millsaps will he regain his old form? Justin Barcia, does he have what it takes to win? Will Weston Peick be back? Mike Alessi? Will Cycle North’s Adam Enticknapp make a main event? I am laying my wager of handful of Canadian Moto Show Kryptonite on the line saying it happens Saturday night.

Although there weren’t a lot of people at the track on Thursday, I did manage to have a good chat with Brett Metcalfe’s teammate Ronnie Stewart.

The Lites’ class WOW! first off congratulations Malcolm Stewart, Mookie you are the poster boy for hard work, dedication, talent, family support and fortitude. A good positive, never give up attitude etc. can get to you if persevered in earnest. You name it Malcolm is the real deal and he was full value for the win. It was beyond impressive to see his gratitude and professionalism on the podium. Now let’s put this into perspective, Malcolm won the race and social media amongst everything else was ablaze as a result of Tyler Bowers and Cooper Webb racing incident. You have to love that blanket term, but like Reed and Canard I am sure you have not only seen it but have your opinion so I will leave it at that until the next chapter is written. These two are definitely playing for keeps and I know I am not the only one that is feeling it is not over yet. So the way I see it this weekend short of Big James Stewart throwing a helmet and some Troy Lee gear on and heading to the line claiming he got stung by a bee, all eyes come gate drop in the ‘Lites’ class will remain on Webb and Bowers.

Be sure to check in here as Palms and I will bring you everything we can from Anaheim and now I am going to seat bounce off to the track, until next ‘Friday Flight’

Brent ‘Airmail’ Worrall out.

As with every year, this is the time when many Canadian riders begin to filter down south to begin their training for the upcoming season.
