Well it is official the Moto Show Bus finally found it’s way back home to the North Okanagan after a 25 day WFO all moto inclusive road trip to the moto hub of the world in Southern California. Before I get too deep I would like to thank my colleague Chris Pomeroy for his sitting in and penning of last weeks ‘Friday Flight’ on my behalf. I was sequestered to the Penthouse suite of Caesars Palace in Las Vegas strapped to my bed with a fever and a reoccurrence of an illness that has plagued me since my injury. It was not the way we had intended to spend our few days in Vegas en route home, but I can not complain as life is about the living and making the best of each situation and focussing forward on the positives. Let’s just say I filled my boots with more than I could have dreamed of Moto wise and beyond on my journey; and would do it again in a heartbeat if I had the resources. I look forward to putting a story together for our next issue of MXP Magazine which I will elaborate on some of the experiences and interactions I had with the Who’s Who of our business as well as some of our own ‘Crazy Canucks’ I was fortunate enough to run into and hang out with.

Part of the plan heading home, which would be normally about 3 days of driving; I had planned to check into a decent room in Oregon on Saturday afternoon allowing me to tune into the evenings Supercross telecast from Arlington as the highly anticipated Eastern portion of the series was set to kick off. A seeming luxury that would disappear just as quick as my T-Shirt wearing torso would once again be covered in a winter jacket as soon as I crossed north of the 49th parallel back into Canada. It seems you have a better chance of winning the Lottery in Canada than you do finding Supercross race on a television set in our country.

While it was a great trip, it was sure nice to be home!

The major Sports networks in the U.S. still televise these events like they should and finding a room that would have it on seemed just a formality, wrong again! Perplexed to say the least after hitting hotel after hotel from Pendleton Oregon to the Tri Cities area of Kennewick Washington I finally resigned myself to the fact it wasn’t going to happen. Knowing that I’m one of very few people in the whole country that can still watch the race on my own television set up at home when it is aired in its time slot I made the ultimate commitment and decided to pin it all the way home!

Yes in one day from Nevada to Vernon B.C. in just under 20 hours I was at last on my own couch with a Rockstar Energy Drink in my hand and a sunburn on my face in my happy place watching Motocross. As the gate dropped and the coverage began the reality of what I was viewing in comparison to watching the previous two weeks ‘Live’ had me wondering if I had made the right decision. I questioned whether or not heading Southeast from SanDiego making the 26 hour trek to Arlington would have been a better option. Unfortuantely, once again like the many mirages and illusions of grander in the dessert trekking north reality quickly threw me an upper cut from the cheap seats and I settled in to focus on the evenings racing.

As a result of this past weekends action it is sure looking like the top three have separated themselves as legitimate heirlooms to the #WhosNext crown. Ryan Dungey, Trey Canard and Ken Roczen are a cut above and as much as I would have liked to think Eli Tomac still has a chance, he did not do himself any favours in Texas. Ryan Dungey has a deserved upper hand and even though he has openly stated he does not like the moniker ‘The Diesel’, he has not disappointed his fans that appropriately coined him that. Ryan has not only done a top shelf job on the track but his focus and commitment in tuning out and enduring all the negative press that was directed his way prior to his recent success is beyond impressive. There is a definite learning curve to winning in the big bike class and many that had success in the small bike class are continuing their research to find that winning formula.

A perfect race in Dallas ended with a perfect heel clicker by Ryan Dungey.

Ryan Dungey has a great team behind him and is putting their brand in a great position. Ryan has always been a great role model and now that he and his East Coast teammate Marvin Musquin are Red Plate holders the big orange machine is firing on all cylinders and has it’s share holders smiling. At these events one of the first rigs I gravitate to is the KTM SX Junior rig as it is so cool to see the future of the sport in action on the big stage.15 youngsters selected for 10 of the rounds get the Royal treatment meeting their idols as well as spinning some laps on a Supercross track. Our own Ayrton Pomeroy just received the phone call of his life this week and will get an opportunity to experience this life changing moment first hand in Indianapolis March 14th. Good luck Ayrton we are all proud of your accomplishments so far and look forward to following your progress through this great event and beyond.

Yes, back to the reality of the great white north and our beloved Canadian winter which should be on its way out any day now right? Whatever Mother Nature has in store for us spring will inevitably arrive and we will all soon be making that first trek of the year to our local race tracks. In the West I have been working closely with Stu McQueen and Future West as we are set to go back racing under the CMRC umbrella and are looking forward to a great season. I know that Ryan Gauld is harnessing everything he can from his 30 plus year tutorial in this sport to bring motocross in Ontario up to a level it has not seen in many many years with the new AMO program. Fast forwarding to the Rockstar Energy Drink Nationals where I truly believe we will see the most competitive title chases in both classes in history. Yes I know that is a statement for some to argue but focusing on the now and seeing who is already committed to line up, plus adding in those last minute additions, wow! 2015 promises to be a season for the record books.

The famous track at Glen Helen.

I just got off the phone with Leading Edge Motorsports Kawasaki rider Todd Minnie from Glen Helen Raceway where he just concluded a marathon lap pounding on a rough race track under the Southern California sun in 26 degree weather. I had the fortune of driving by the fabled circuit on my trek south which will host the highly anticipated World Championship finale this fall. Todd has been down south for over a month now and is also looking to turn some heads his direction when the gate drops for keeps this summer in Canada. I have gotten to know Todd quite well since he has made his return to racing after 10 plus years away and I admire and respect everything he has done to get himself back to where he is. If there was an award to be given for comeback of the year Todd would be the winner hands down. Todd has had to overcome long odds on many levels and is proof that with a little bit of talent, a whole lot more heart and desire anything is possible. Okay Todd maybe breaking your horns a little on the the talent thing, after all how many racers can stay away ten years and come back competitive? That’s what I thought. Good luck moving forward and thanks for taking the time to text me photos and progress reports daily. Todd was spinning laps Thursday at Glen Helen with likes of Royal Distributing KTM rider Cole Thompson whom I just texted to get a brief account of how things are going. Cole admitted that he would likely be lining up a few times before our series kicks off in Kamloops; but at this point did not say exactly when and where. Jess Pettis, Dylan Kaelin, Brock Leitner and Shawn Maffenebier were other notable Canadians spinning laps Thursday at Glen Helen. I know there are scores of other Canadians south on both coasts as we inch closer towards the gate drop in Kamloops on May 31st, who’s ready for some great racing?

Have a safe weekend friends and enjoy what’s left of winter as it won’t last forever, I promise.

until next ‘Friday Flight’ Airmail out………
