The Play-By-Play of Cole Seely’s Race Day in Las Vegas

Caps Off First 450SX Campaign with Rookie of the Year Honors

Las Vegas (May 2, 2015) – Troy Lee Designs rider Cole Seely finished just off the podium as the 2015 supercross series wrapped up inside Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas on Saturday night. Prior to the drop of the gate, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) honored Seely with the 2015 AMA Supercross Rookie of the Year award. Seely’s five podium appearances, one main event victory and third place in the championship standings were more than enough to secure the well deserved honors. With the end of the supercross season in sight, we took one last opportunity to tag along with Seely throughout his day in Las Vegas to find out what a factory rider’s schedule looks like on and off the track.
9:18 a.m. – Under the Team Honda tent, Seely talks with a FOX Sports 1 reporter about all of the success he’s enjoyed throughout his rookie season and expectations for the final supercross round of the season.
10:36 a.m. – It’s all about rhythm. Seely and the rest of the Honda team survey one of the track’s tricky rhythm sections. The #14 has been in sync at virtually all of the 16 rounds this season, making him more than worthy of Rookie of the Year honors.
12:15 p.m. – Yesterday, the all-new Troy Lee Designs SE Air gear was launched and the timing couldn’t have been better with temperatures in Vegas reaching above 90 degrees. Here, Seely and his mechanic keep cool as they wait to head in for the first practice session of the day.
4:35 p.m. – Following the second of two qualifying sessions, Seely establishes himself in seventh position, just a fraction of a second outside of the top three. His time would seed him into the second heat race of the evening.
7:57 p.m. – Thanks to a good jump out of the gate in the second heat race, Seely rode a strong race en route to a second place finish. Even though the track was pretty wet at the start of the evening, after a few short qualifying races the track had already started to deteriorate forcing racers to choose some creative lines.“Starting at the front of the pack is always a big advantage, especially in the shorter qualifying races,” said Seely. “I got out of the gate well and focused on riding a clean race. Transferring directly to the main event is always nice and I’ll have a pretty good gate pick that should come in handy with the really long start here.”
9:55 p.m. – Seely positioned himself just inside the top 10 as the final 450 SX Main Event came flying into Sam Boyd Stadium. By the fifth lap he had already moved into the top-5 and began pressuring for a podium position. After battling for third position for a handful of laps, Seely settled into fourth position with a few laps to go, which is where he would finish.“The track here in Vegas was pretty challenging with a mix of hard pack, ruts and very high speeds,” said Seely. “It would have been great to end the season on the box but I couldn’t be happier with how the season went overall. I’m really looking forward to heading outdoors and getting that series started in just a couple of short weeks.”
10:02 p.m. – The 2015 AMA Supercross series is in the books and Seely has earned third place in the championship standings. A very impressive rookie season and undoubtedly a sign of good things to come.
