With no Toronto SX this year or even in the near future, Seattle and Detroit are the closest cities the 2019 Monster Energy Supercross Series comes to Canada. This past weekend, Ford Field in downtown Detroit hosted Round 8 in front of one of the largest crowds ever in the Motor City. With the 250SX East Series still in its infancy and the 450SX Series having a different points leader at almost every race, you can see why there is so much fan excitement.
With the Detroit SX being the second Triple Crown event of 2019, the riders were ready to race three important main events in front of the capacity crowd. In the 250SX East class, Kawasaki rider Austin Forkner once again dominated his competition by winning all three main events. Behind him, Jordon Smith and Justin Cooper are doing their best to keep the young phenom close.
In the 450 class, Eli Tomac obviously enjoyed the soft and rutted Detroit track as he went 1-1-6 to win the overall, only his second win of the season. As good as Tomac looked on Saturday night, he will have to find a lot more consistency if he wants to get himself back into the championship chase. Tomac is currently 13 points behind red plate holder Cooper Webb. Another thing the fans in Detroit had to cheer about was the riding of 36-year-old Chad Reed. After a great week of testing, Reed rode great inside the tight confines of Ford Field to grab the 132nd 450SX podium of his long career. Now the series moves south down the I-75 to the new Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta for Round 9. As he was a few weeks ago in Minneapolis, Matt Wellumson was in Detroit and sent us these incredible photos for this week’s Yamaha Motor Canada Behind the Lens.
