MXP: Hey Newf, let’s start with the Big Kahuna 500 event on the weekend. As you saw on the weekend the off-road racing scene is massive in BC and the event looked amazing. You and your son Meston ended up racing, how did it go?

RL: Overall it was a great event. They had 444 individual riders sign up which is huge for western Canada. It was a really cool course they had set up for the big bikes and for the kids. Meston raced on Saturday and his race was 45 minutes and then my race was two hours. Needless to say, I don’t think myself or Meston will ever make it to the big leagues in the off-road world but it was fun to try something new as well as beat the old body into shape before Round 1 of the Future West MX Series this weekend. I was so tired on the final lap that I sat down for the entire 15 minute lap (laughs).

Tyler Medaglia

MXP: There were a few big names in attendance on the weekend. Tyler Medaglia took the win in the pro class, what are your thoughts on Tyler’s off-road racing skills?

RL: It was impressive to see while he was lapping me that’s for sure. I mean this course really played into Tyler’s favour as it was a lot of motocross, grass track, etc. But wow he put a hurting on these guys. There was a lot of hype about who was going to win between Trystan Hart and Tyler but it wasn’t even close. Of course, if it was one of those Hard Enduro’s, Trystan would smoke him. Tyler is such a well-rounded athlete on two wheels and it was cool to spend the weekend with him and learn about the off-road side of things. There is a lot of preparation that has to go into it since you are riding the bike for two plus hours.

MXP: Moving onto the Atlanta SX. The weekend didn’t start well with a massive triple on press day and then rain on Saturday morning. Thankfully, they fixed the triple for race day and the rain stopped and the track turned out pretty good. What stood out to you from Round 14 in Atlanta?

RL: They dodged a bullet with the weather and I really liked the track. I didn’t get a chance to watch the race but from what I saw from the highlights it looked awesome. Of course, we didn’t really get to see the Jett vs Craig battle as they both had some bad luck but I did think it was cool to see Hunter win, especially after his huge get-off on that triple on press day. I like the Speedway tracks as I feel it gives the track builders more room to build some different obstacles. It’s hard to believe the series is almost over but overall besides the injuries from some of the top guys I think it’s been great!
