Is it just me or did the month of January seem like it flew by? Here we are just two months from the Toronto SX and basically another couple weeks after that we will all be riding in Canada. I am okay with winter flying by in the blink of an eye. Mind you, I’m a huge fan of the Canadian winter. Hot chocolate, pond hockey, fire places, and hanging outdoors on sunny cold days. It all makes for special times when you get to experience our winters. I am fortunate enough to be going to Jamaica this Thursday for my one week out of the cold. That’s all I need. I have never understood Canucks who spend their entire winter down south (unless you’re training for moto), running from their heritage and their home. I do get some of the bonuses that come with leaving the cold for warmer climates, but really, there is no place like home.

The series has really been a great way to fill our racing fix in Canada. Stands have been full, racing has been intense and the Hellams, along with their supporting sponsors and loyal fans, have really grown the series into a good feeder system for so many big name racers over the years. Riders like Darcy Lange, Colton Facciotti, Dusty Klatt, and Kyle Beaton just to name a few. The list this year of Spencer Knowles, Brock Hoyer, Brad Nauditt, Ryan Lockhart, Dylan Delaplace, Kyle Springman and many more are gaining great experience, and even better yet, time on their bikes in the cold Canadian winter. I wish I was closer to these races because the times that I had the chance to see them have always been solid. With only 4 rounds remaining I believe we can give an early pat on the back to Jaime and John Hellam for once again taking a shot, laying their wallets out, and dealing with criticism to create a great series for the BC racers. If you’re a fan or racer that reads this, be sure over the next two weekends to give your thanks to those guys. Putting on races is not easy and usually a thankless job. It won’t kill you to give them a high five next time you see them. Be good to those who give us knuckle headed motocross racers a spot to turn up dirt. Thanks guys.
The Winter X games just wrapped up this weekend. I got a chance to watch some of the events and as per usual it was all pretty killer! At times it looked like the attendance may have been a little weak but that’s just a guy watching it on TV. I wasn’t there. But for those in attendance they got to witness history when both Shaun White and Tucker Hibbert claimed their record setting 6th Gold metals. That’s a pretty amazing feat for both athletes. It was also cool to see that Shaun White cut that awful hair he used to run. LOL One of the only reasons I watch Winter X is for Snocross. I used to race it and it’s a cool sport, plus so many motocrossers use it as their crossover sport. It was awesome to see Quebec racer Tim Tremblay get a bronze medal in the final behind Hibbert and Ross Martin. I talked to Tim just hours afterwards and he had this to say:
“This was my third time at X-Games. The first two years I had some bad luck and mechanic issues, but this year everything fell into place. I set the 2nd fastest lap time in practice then I won my qualifier, and in the final I got a 3rd place start. I battled hard for 2nd for a while and finally end up in third place. I’m pretty happy to bring the bronze home. I just want to thank all my sponsors that helped make this happen: Ski Doo, Amsoil, US Air Force, Rockstar, Traxxas, Makita, Klim, Fox Shox, Woodys, C&A Pro Ski, Oakley, Atlas, CTI, and forma boots.
Congrats Tim.
I also got a chance to catch up with another Canadian motocross racer that made his very first final at X Games. Iain Hayden has been the best Snocross in the CSRA for many years but has always struggled a little when racing the bigger events. Things went well for Hayden this go around. He had this to say:
It was a good week all in all. I struggled a little bit in seeding practice and was forced to start in the back row in my heat. I started 9th and got up to 5th which was good enough to make the front row. In the main I had a great jump and went into the first turn in the top 5 but some squirrel went straight through and blew us off the track. Half a lap later on the big downhill jump one of the spark plug cables came off and I was forced to DNF. Bummer deal but glad I put it in the main. There’s always next year, right?

Iain Hayden is pretty amped about this year’s Winter X Games. If not for a mechanical issue it may have gone even better.
Thanks for sharing that buds and congrats on a solid week at Winter X.

Ken Roczen has been slowly closing the gap on Tomac and this weekend he did more than close it. He grabbed his first win of 2013 and the points lead in the 250 class.
The Monster Energy Supercross was in Oakland this weekend. The racing wasn’t as good as the first three races but it’s awesome the way the points are shaping up in the 450 class. Davi Millsaps still leads after crossing the checkers in 2nd on Saturday night. Now whoever would have said that he would be in the lead after four races is one hell of a fortune teller. Closing in is champion Ryan Villopoto who took his second win in a row and he did it again in dominating fashion. He holeshot and led wire to wire, basically unchallenged. This is not good for the competition. When champions like Poto get on a roll they are hard to stop. Plus, how cool was it to see that his brother Tyler win in Tulsa, Oklahoma in Arenacross, while at the same time his big bro won in Oakland? Kind of a neat fact. The 250 class saw a big turnaround in the points race. Mr. Perfect, Eli Tomac, had an off-weekend after hitting the ground hard and garnering only one point. This gave the chance for Ken Roczen to claim his first victory of the year and grab an 11 point lead over Cole Seely and 15 over Tomac. This class just got real interesting with only four rounds left. Tomac will have to win all of the remaining rounds and hope Roczen has at least one night where he’s not on the box if he wants to win his second 250 title. The next two weekends before a huge break for the West class should be really good considering the drama that unfolded from Oakland.

The #1 ride of Ryan Villopoto is starting to get hot and that’s bad news for the rest of the racers looking to win this title.
To end this I want to thank Dave Beatty (Father of East Coast SX 250 rider Nicky Beatty) for tweeting us the results from the Florida Winter Am series where Canadian racers Tyler Medaglia, Konnor Long, Nicky Beatty, and Shawn Robinson were racing. Tyler and Nicky were battling within the top 5. I looked for results but they haven’t put them up on the site yet from the weekend.

Big thanks to Tyler Medaglia for sharing this cool video of Konnor Long, Shawn Robinson, and himself practicing and racing in Florida as they prep for the summer of 2013.
Have a great week folks!!
