This is it friends, fasten those seat belts as we prepare to embark on the final ‘Friday Flight’ of 2015 as Christmas Day is only a week away. What a great year it has been in Canada at the race track and for us here at the MXP Magazine. While I still have you in staging before we get airborne, I would like to thank each and every one of you who has logged in and climbed aboard the weekly Friday Flight. It is always a blast each week to share my experiences and views from my many many interactions had at the races. Looking back on 2015 it is beyond belief that a man, who 4 years ago was not expected to survive 48 hours, just spent 27 weekends on the road at Motocross races. I would like to think that I am living proof that if this sport is in your blood, you do not have to be on the race track to be involved and make a difference. I feel blessed beyond words that I am surrounded by so many good people and have the opportunities I do to share my passion. I take absolutely nothing for granted and value each and every one of you more than you will ever know. We are as good as the people we surround ourselves with and you my friends have this Mule feeling like a Race Horse.

The KTM Canada boys want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas! Photo by Michael Earle

As we head into the week that will see many of us celebrate the Christmas holidays, I am in heavy reflection mode, which has me focussed solely on values. With the final days ticking down on the calendar year, the reflection thoughts of values and what is really important are stronger than ever. Maybe it’s because I am getting older or wiser to the world and what is really valuable, who knows. I have a lot on my personal plate and will admit I am very physically worn down from 2015. Whatever the reason, I cannot help but wonder as I reflect with deep gratitude, what was your most memorable moment of the 2015 racing season that you experienced? As I throw that out there for you to chew on between nibbles of shortbread, I am reeling hard to find my own answer. Without balking for too long, I am not sure if there is one particular moment I can or would dare put my finger on. Would it be a result or title-related thing for you? Maybe, for me most definitely not. Once again this sport to me is about the memories of the moments shared with my many Moto brothers and sisters. As an old guy who grew up burning mixed fuel, seeing Kaven Benoit win his second consecutive MX-2 title like a boss, solely on a two-stroke, would rank up there. To me though Kaven did not need to win that title to have a fan in me. If you know Kaven Benoit, you know that title came as a result of the winner he has become on and off the race track. Winning is a formula that is as universally unique as the great personalities that make up the sport of Motocross. The positions and results as much as they are the goals sought after are by no means the alpha and omega of Motocross. The personalities inside the helmets, the dedicated army of supporters behind them. Along with the fans anticipating, what will happen when the gate is dropped are just small parts of this timeless and insatiable lure.

Many may argue that, and for some it might even be years for the true value of what they are experiencing to surface. I find myself thinking more about the well-being of my immediate family and close friends. I don’t know if it is a guilty conscience or just the reality of going from living 2015 chasing racing wide open to now stopped. I am probably not alone in this, but if not, your silence is a good enough answer. My daughter will be married this spring and I am very proud of her for the choices she has made and the life she has. When it comes to friends, they have seen much more of me in 2015 than my immediate family as each and every one of them are involved in racing. There again if I am the oddball in this department your silence is probably the best response. That being said some of my thoughts and connections this week have been with a few of my Moto colleagues who are enduring some tough times. First off, Ryan Lockhart’s newborn son Meston was admitted to hospital Monday afternoon for a serious infection in his urinary tract. New parents Ryan and Randi by his side had a huge scare as no one really knew what was wrong as Meston’s temperature soared out of control. It was originally thought to be meningitis but ruled out after a spinal tap. Poor kid. At writing of this he has marginally improved and hoped to be back home sometime this weekend.

After crashing down South, Jean Christophe Bujold will be off the bike for a few months with a broken femur. Photo by Jesse Luduc

Another get will wish goes out to my friend Dylan Kaelin who has now been in hospital 20 days with serious internal injuries. Earlier this week the ultrasound showed that the blood clot is in his duodenum has not gone down as of yet. He had some fluid drained and is still on an IV diet. Dylan is very tired and looking forward to eating real food again one day soon. Don’t be shy to send him a get well wish friends, he’d love to hear from you. Hang in there buddy, you’re a warrior and we look forward to hearing news of your improved health soon. J.C ‘Buzz’ Bujold, who I spoke with at great length just a month ago on my Canadian Moto Show, had a pretty serious crash, breaking his femur at the JWTF. He is on the mend back home and will hopefully be back on the bike pursuing his dreams of besting his 2015 national #42 soon. J.C. ‘Buzz’ Bujold was featured as one of the Top 10 up and coming riders in our latest issue of MXP Magazine. Get well quick buddy and I hope your English teacher gave you an ‘A’ as you were a great interview on the show.

The latest MXP Mag issue also saw me with the honour of profiling 5 of the top 10 up and coming talents in Canadian Motocross. The riders that I got to know a lot more about and share with you are newly re-signed KTM Racing riders Tanner Ward, and Jacob Piccolo along with Damon ’Turbine’ Burbine, Casey Keast and Tyler Gibbs. Andy White and Chris Pomeroy, our fearless leading editor, were the other contributors to this piece that looks and reads great. If you see it on social media, share it with your friends as these top amateur up and comers are full value for their coverage they earned. If you are reading this and thinking there are maybe one or two or more that could have been on there, you may be on to something. I do not see this as a bad thing as in the long run the more the bright up and coming lights the better off the sport is. If it was me and I thought my name should be on there and it wasn’t? That fuel would be already in my 2016 gas tank as I set out to show everybody why. Like I said friends, with invoking the vision of a bigger picture, a great foundation is built that unwavering success can succeed on.

The team at Bow Cycle is ready for 2016!! Look at how cool that pipe looks on the two-stroke.

With the past year on the track now history it will not be long before we are forwardly focussed on the New Year. I myself have taken a long, hard look back at 2015 and am making some changes for 2016. I know many of you will be doing the same as most racers already have some sort of a game plan to come out swinging with. The gate will be dropping in Anaheim for the 2016 Supercross season and will have the full attention of Motocross fans globally. I am headed to San Diego the 3rd week of January and will not return to Canada until March. For someone who gave 2015 everything he had and then some, this puts a huge smile on my face. It will be a great way to recharge my batteries while cheering for our own Cole Thompson and others.
Wherever the holiday season takes you friends, stay safe and keep that Moto passion pinned. Until next ‘Friday Flight‘ in the New Year…….Airmail’ out………………

merry xmas

Happy Holidays everyone and we’ll see you in 2016. Thank you for an awesome year and thank you for reading!
