Dealer Profile- Maple Ridge Motorsports

Across Canada, dealerships have long been the backbone of our industry. They’ve celebrated the highs, weathered the lows, and adapted to every twist in the ever-changing motorcycle market. Ask any dealer what it takes to succeed, and they’ll tell you: patience, determination, and above all, a genuine love for the sport.

One dealership that embodies all of this is Maple Ridge Motor Sports (MRM), perched on Lougheed Highway near the Golden Ears Bridge in beautiful Maple Ridge, BC. For decades, MRM has been the go-to spot for riders of all stripes—street, dirt, UTV, or MX. Whether you’re eyeing a new or used Kawasaki, KTM, Honda, or Suzuki, or simply need expert servicing, MRM has earned its reputation as the Lower Mainland’s one-stop family fun store.

From the moment you walk into MRM, there are new bikes as far as the eye can see.

A Family Legacy on Two Wheels

For thirty years, Troy Smith has been at the heart of MRM. Back in the early days, there were no cell phones, no e-transfers, and certainly no World Wide Web. Business was done with fiche machines, phone calls, and old-school credit card imprints. Fast forward to today, and MRM has evolved right alongside the industry.

Since taking sole ownership in 2004 with his wife Sandra, Troy has turned MRM into more than just a dealership—it’s a community hub. Along with their son Devyn, the Smith family spent years crisscrossing Canada, racing the Triple Crown Series. Those coast-to-coast experiences shaped their vision and helped them build MRM into the welcoming, rider-first dealership it is today. To get a deeper look at what makes MRM tick, we sat down with Troy Smith for a chat.

The Smith’s were longtime fixtures at the Triple Crown Series rounds as their son Devyn is a talented Pro rider.

MXP: How long has the MRM dealership been around, and how long have you and Sandra been involved?

Troy: Maple Ridge Motorsports was started in 1995 by Dale Wallis. A few months in myself and a mechanic friend Dan Tosh bought in. Over the years we moved forward to being just ourselves in 2004ish I think.

MXP: Over the years (and currently), which riders have you supported?

Wow! your putting me on the spot. We have helped many riders and families over the years chase their dreams and goals from local events to National events, road racing, motocross and cross country racing. I won’t drop names in fear of missing anyone but rest assured it has been great memories along the way, each and every one of them have helped with the progression of our store over the years and hold a special spot for me personally!

MXP: What have been the biggest changes in the industry over the past decade that have affected how you run the business?

The internet has been the biggest change. You have to remember in 1995 when we started there was no such thing. We looked up parts on a fiche machine, picked up the phone to call our suppliers to place orders, used the old credit card machine to take a card imprint and call for authorization if over $100. LOL Your bringing back some memories with these questions. Now everything is down on line etc.

MXP: MRM is a multi brand dealership in an area where you can ride for pretty much 365 days a year. What is your best selling motorcycle?

We pride ourselves in being pretty well verse from Atvs, side by sides, dirt bikes and street bikes. They mostly all get used year round. I do have to say being close to the mountains and trails our largest segment is off road. Largest volume KTM is the 300 XCW and for Kawasaki it’s the KLX 140.

MXP: There are several dealerships in your area, what separates MRM from the others?

I’d like to think its our personal touch. Every dealership for the most part has the same products, parts accessories etc. Our advantage is we are a small shop all on the same level and we do our best to treat and deal with others as we wish to be treated. The old saying you get honey with honey and we like it that way!

MXP: Where do you see MRM in say ten years?

Thirty years has gone by in a flash. We have customers that have become friends who used to bring theirs children in the store now their kids are bringing their kids in. It’s awesome.  The best part of this industry is people don’t “have to” ride motorcycles or ATVs they “want to” do ride them. 10 more years isn’t that far away. I see us enjoying what  we do, keeping true to ourselves and have a WOOOO of  a time along the way!

If you’re in need of some Fox Racing casual wear, then MRM is the place to go.

The MRM Experience

Troy Smith is the kind of guy who instantly makes you feel welcome. His outgoing personality sets the tone the moment you walk through the doors. His wife, Sandra runs the accessories side of MRM, daughter Madyson spear heads the parts department while Gary and Tim take care of service needs. They all perform their work with unmatched knowledge and enthusiasm.

Step into the back of the dealership and you’re greeted by racks of stylish Fox Racing gear and casual wear. Looking for the latest Haiden Deegan replica kit? They’ve got it. Need goggles, boots, or casual wear from brands like 100% or Alpinestars, there team has you covered—and will happily walk you through every detail with a smile.

It’s rare to leave a dealership feeling energized, but that’s exactly what MRM delivers. Between the people, the vibe, and the endless cool gear, I found myself wishing I didn’t live on the other side of the country so I could drop by more often.

Sandra Smith always has a smile on her face!

A Highlight of the BC Trip

Visiting MRM was easily one of the highlights of my trip to BC. After years of seeing the Smith family at Triple Crown rounds, it was special to finally experience their dealership firsthand.

A huge thank you to Troy, Sandra, and the entire MRM team for their hospitality. If my travels bring me back to BC and the West Coast AX Series next year, you can bet I’ll be making another stop at Maple Ridge Motor Sports.
