MX101 SDL Photo Report

by Ryan Gauld

You always know what you get when you head to Sand Del Lee for the weekend. A solid track to race on that any level rider can enjoy, a warm welcome from the entire MX101 crew, and a two day blast in the sand that leaves us all wanting more (well most of us). Johnny and Kevin are great guys and really know how to make every family and racer feel like they’re part of the history behind Sand Del Lee. I have never claimed to be a photographer and I actually can’t stand having to take pictures, but when the shoes need to be filled, I’m there. So enjoy this little report from last weekend’s race at Sand Del Lee.

If you want to meet a good dude with a lot of knowledge about the sport and years of experience to train little Johnny to greatness, hit up Ryan "Newf" Lockhart. (RYANLOCKHART@HOTMAIL.CA)

MX101 had a cool prize for purchasing a membership early. Kenzie Hennessy was the lucky winner at the first race of the year. A signed Blackfoot Yamaha 2011 MX2 Championship jersey from Tyler Medaglia is what Hennessy took home for being a local supporter of MX101. Way cool guys!!

As I said above, a solid weekend from this crew. I’m sure they would have preferred a little better turnout but all in all it was a great two days at MX101.

Winning can give you an attitude very easily, and at any age. Brandon Gourley won every moto I watched in 85cc. I just checked and he lost one to the guy in the next photo. Gourley showed me he’s growing up on Sunday. He was about the head back down the walk path beside the tunnel (he came from the start through there but didn't get busted), which is a no no at MX101, Rick Argue saw this and stopped Brandon before he entered and told him in a stern voice to go back the other direction. Now this is where I was impressed. The kid just listened and didn't say anything back. He turned around and went to the start the normal way, and he didn’t even roost Rick. I don't know if they know each other but I thought that was very respectful of what Rick was asking him to do. So Brandon, good on ya kid; also, great riding this weekend.

Now this is the guy that put a stop to the perfect weekend for Gourley. Conner Arsenault, in the 12-16 class, took the first moto on Sunday. These kids were ripping for sure.

I like this pic. This kid just waxes this corner, throttle full whisky'd and leg swinging like a Sand Boss.

Same corner just minutes later, Bryson Cochrane did close to the same thing; maybe not as stylish but still grabbing gas with no panic mode.

Hayden Halstead showing me that two-strokes blow berms better than four-strokes. When I see this I agree. He just owned that berm. . LOL

"Duffman throws scrubs and is here to entertain you" If only that was the voice from the Simpsons character "Duffman" it would mean more. hahah Tyler Duffy getting scruffy on the finish at MX101.

Just minutes after Hayden destroyed that berm, his bike quit. He got it fixed (Awwww the two-stroke) and raced six motos a day. I love to see that. You should race as many classes as you can when you’re trying to move forward in the sport. There is no practice that can compare to race laps. Good on ya Hayden.

I think that means wide open, or maybe drinks after? Either way, Newf is into it. Cheers mate.

Kenzie Hennessy doesn't listen when people say the outside is a waste. Kenzie ripped a huge holeshot from the far outside in the very first Junior moto of the weekend. Apparently the Husky has some ponies under the hood in the deep, muddy sand.

So this is the kid that had the perfect weekend. Scott Cameron stole the show in the MX2 and MX3 Junior classes. He actually made that class a bit of yawner. He made it look more like a weekend drive in the country just soaking up the scenery. LOL

One of the quietest Pros I have ever met since I've been racing, Shawn Robinson is a good kid that seems to have figured out gettin’ skinny makes ya faster. He beat Keast in both first motos on Saturday, mind you the track was a bit one line and very tough to pass. Shawn rode fast enough, with confidence, and stayed consistent enough to make it super tough for the Dozer. Monster Energy Motocross Nationals are a completely different story, but if Shawn can carry that speed and comfort into the series, he may surprise us this year.

Chloe Poncia-Myre airing the table on her way to a perfect weekend in the Ladies class.

Little snooze for Little D. I won't post the pics I have of Keaster giving him the pressed ham (full moon to cheek). Kid didn't even move. Hahahaha

Tyler Rayner and Jay Burke are doing the Nationals together this summer. Rayner rips holeshots and Burke will take anybody on in the pits. Could be a deadly summer. #Privateerheros LOL

Daddy Duffman, Steve, knows who to call for the scoop, or a free T!! We'll set you up with a freshy Steve asap. Thanks for repping.

Taylor Arsenault was fast all weekend. He didn't win a moto, which makes me think he's wearing the Bronze Boot all the time and it's weighing him down. LOL

Buddy grabbed a little too much throttle out of the gate. LOL

Tiz Cousineau has also jumped on the two-stroke ship. He was riding really well all weekend long.

Jay Burke does to the berm what he would have done to the guy he had issues with that parked beside him. SMASH!!!!

Tyler Rayner was the holeshot artist all weekend in every moto. If he can do that at the Nationals, he will get a lot of press plus his confidence will rise.

Richard Grey was ultra-impressive on the smaller bike against the 450s this weekend. There was not one moto where he didn't move forward and made some amazing passes in the process on his OTSFF Yamaha YZ250F. He’s the dark horse for the MX2 class this summer.

Tyler Ryan giving everything he's got to rail this berm.

The fastest Intermediate on the weekend was Brandon Spencer #393. He only lost 1 of his 12 motos (Dylan Wright won it). The kid came to the races on his own and showed some solid speed and consistency en route to taking six overalls. Watch for this kid at Gopher Dunes on his 250 two-stroke in the MX2 class.

Our buddy Cody getting prepped for the start.

How Liam O'Farrell could ride as fast as he did with the way his bike was working was ridiculously remarkable. This guy has some major skill but just can't catch a break. Let's hope things go a little better for Liam. He deserves it.

Jeremy Medaglia showed up on Sunday, not because he had to, but because he wanted to support MX101. He also had a really good chat with me and I appreciate his kind words on the subject. Jeremy is definitely heading into round one at Nanaimo as the odds on favourite for the MX2 crown.

Let me just say that Dylan Wright is one fast kid on a YZ125. He is only 14 years-old but rides like a Pro already. One day this kid will no doubt be battling for top honours on the National circuit.

Thomas Rendall dominated the 50 class, sold some bikes for his sponsor Wheelsport, and writes his own race reports. This little dude does it all. I could see him running MXP in the future!!

Cameron Maunders drags his leg en route to a couple of 3rds in the 50cc 4-6 class.

Big thumbs up to the MX101 crew and all the race families that showed up to enjoy two days of fun times at the race track. See ya on the gate soon!!
