MXP: Hey Newf, what are your thoughts on what went down in Detroit. We saw multiple crashes from some very good riders.
RL: I couldn’t believe my eyes as I was watching Saturday night and the way it all happened was hard to believe. Think about this, 22 riders on 450s on a 40sec lap time track that was slick but had deep ruts and they have to race for 27 laps….. it’s not a matter of if, it’s more like when. Sounds like all the guys will be okay but what a shame for the championship. Eli has a 42 point lead so unless something really unlucky for him happens it’s over.
MXP: Now that the 2022 Monster Energy Supercross Series is over halfway complete, we’ve had a chance to assess a lot of things. You just mentioned Eli Tomac. He’s been on a roll and looks almost unbeatable right now. What do you think it is about his Star Racing Yamaha that has him so in sync?
RL: I listen to a lot of Pulpmx and John Tomac was on the show last week and it sounds like Eli can do or try pretty much whatever he wants. It sounded like his hands were a bit tied over at Kawi and that made him unhappy. At Star, it sounds like he has control over what direction he wants to go with the bike, etc. I also think the bike suites him very well with his aggressive riding style and with how strong he is. Either way, the move has worked out really well for all those involved and I think he’s even going to be better outdoors.
MXP: As far as our Canadian riders go, St Cyr rode his 250F in the 450SX and seem to do okay. I didn’t even know you were allowed to do this but a few riders have. Tanner Ward had his best result of the series and just missed the 250SX East main event by a couple of spots. We spoke to him this week and he’s pretty excited for Indianapolis this weekend. What does Tanner have to do to not only make the main event, but also have a solid race at Round 11?
RL: I’m sure it felt good for St Cyr to make a night show and make $1000 for all his efforts. Tanner looked a lot more confident in Detroit that’s for sure. Starts we’re better and he put himself in a position to get into the main. He still needs a little more speed as he was in position in the heat to make the main but went back a few spots. He has the speed but just needs to use it when it counts. Would be great to see him make one as this will be his last go before he starts to get ready on the 450 for this summer.
