The first long weekend kicked off and what a beauty it was. Plus 25 temperatures every day and the sun was just burning all them whitey’s on the lake (this Moby dick included LOL). I was pretty pumped as I got the boat in the water and good friends (Keast, Newf, Grey, the Seagulls hockey team and some significant others) all joined in on what was a beauty day. Racing a dirt bike was the furthest thing from anybody’s mind, even though we were all over Twitter checking to see who won in Hangtown and Motopark. So just because you take a day off doesn’t mean that you’re still not wondering what’s happening at the track. The crazy passion we all share for the sport will never go away, even if we do.
KTM 2013 Launch
Exactly 12 days from now, the Canadian Moto industry will be taking over the town of Nanaimo with loud dirt bikes, fast woman and the start of the Monster Energy Motocross Nationals. The ones that have to make the long drive from the east, like Dylan Kaelin (alone) as well as the Machine Racing Team of Ryan Lockhart and Kyle Keast, have all left the barn. They will be on the road for just under 50 hours, travelling across this beautiful country of ours. It really is a nice drive but not the most exciting. I have done it about five times on my own and let’s just say I was stoked I had a TV set up on the passenger seat to help keep my eyes open.
Highlight video from Hangtown
Everybody that is heading to Nanaimo should be 100% ready now. Training, bike set up, and goals for the first round should be set to go. Excitement’s is in the air, especially since Hangtown just went off in the US, which was a great start to their series. Let’s just hope ours is along the same lines. With all these big changes to the series, the riders and teams, it really is tough to pick a favourite right now. Obviously, Colton Facciotti is still on the top of the list for the MX1 class. The way he has dominated en route to his three titles in the class makes it hard to not bet on the new member of the Royal Distributing KTM Red Bull Fox team, but how about that #2 guy, his teammate? Dusty Klatt just had a baby which has to be some serious motivation, you would think, for him to show us that Colton doesn’t always have his number. Then you have the #4 of Kyle Keast with his new Yamahas, new trainer, new attitude and new riding coach/mechanic, Ryan Lockhart. Monster Energy Leading Edge top gun Matt Goerke will be on the gas no doubt this summer. Then you add in the #11 of Tyler Medaglia with his own team, and who could forget about Bobby Kiniry who just rode to an amazing 12th at Hangtown after starting outside the top 25 both motos. He is ready as well. The odds makers are getting set for the gate to drop on June 3rd at Nanaimo, but you know what, you never really know what happens until that first drop. That’s what is so special about this sport. It is really anybody’s game out on the track. So who do you think it will be?
I would say Jeremy Medaglia is the favourite in MX2. Yes, Teddy Maier has won a title before, but Jeremy has put in the time and he feels this year is the one. From what I have seen already, it’s hard not to agree. Then names like Parker and Jared Allison, Richard Grey, Dylan Kaelin, Tyler Sjoberg, Spencer Knowles, Nicky Beatty, plus I’m sure there will be a few last minute entries that show and give us a surprise. I remember when my name was one of these hot shots. I was always so nervous and could never win the head game side of racing. I still get the butterflies even though I’m not racing. I wonder who will be able to control the nerves and butterflies, and be chatting to me on the box at the end of each moto?
Last week we ventured to Motopark for a Yamaha Media Day. Follow this link for the full report HERE and also check out this sweet video from MXPFilms’ front man Frankie B.
