MXP Chatter: Rockstar Energy’s Dave Giancoulos

Rockstar Series logo

Rockstar Energy Drink VP Dave Giancoulos is no stranger to motocross as he has been at the forefront of the action sports industry for ten years. Having been the title sponsor for the Rockstar OTSFF Yamaha Team for a number of years, the time seemed right to take their support of Canadian motocross even further. For 2014, Rockstar Energy Drink will be the title sponsor for the Canadian MX Nationals. We caught up with Dave to get his thoughts on this big move.

Q: First off, congratulations on becoming the new title sponsor of the Canadian MX Nationals. Has Rockstar had this vision for a while now?

DG: Yes, we have had our eye on the Canadian MX Nationals for quite some time. The timing was right for us this year to make the acquisition and we’re hugely excited about the partnership moving forward.

Q: Why did you choose now to expand you efforts in Canadian Motocross?

DG: The Rockstar brand continues to grow rapidly in Canada. With that being said, seeking new opportunities to complement our brands personality while at the same time giving us the ability to interact with our core consumers is vital to our brand’s long term development. Canadian Motocross continues to increase in popularity and the MX National series is the #1 action-sport series that exists in Canada. As they say, timing is key and it’s the right time for us to enter into a marriage.

Q: You’ve been a part of Canadian motocross for a number of years with the OTSFF Team. Will that relationship continue?

DG: Yes, it certainly will and we are very optimistic about this season and what the future will hold for OTSFF! Get ready for the best season yet!

Q: What is it about motocross that Rockstar likes?

DG: Rockstar has always supported the active Rockstar lifestyle in Canada through action sports and motorsports. These family oriented sports portray a pure, healthy way of living on the edge and appeal to a mainstream fan base. More specifically, motocross is a sport that we have been actively involved with around the world since we launched and it will continue to play a significant role in shaping our brand’s identity.

Q: Can you give us any hints as far as what we can expect at the 2014 Rockstar Energy Drink Motocross Nationals?

DG: Let’s just say we are diligently working on ideas to promote series growth and attract a wider following for the Motocross Nationals. CMRC and ROCKSTAR share the common goal to produce the best overall experience for the fans and competitors while adding our ROCKSTAR signature to it!

Q: Aside from motocross, who are some of your top athletes in Canada?

DG: We have over 200 athletes competing in USA/Canada in 9 different sports (MX, FMX, BMX, SURF, Mountain Bike, Ski, Snowboard, Freestyle snowmobile, Wake). Last year alone our athletes were able to podium over 150 times and rack in 34 X-Games medals. A few of our top athletes in Canada include: Antoine L’estage (Rally), Jason Hathaway (NASCAR Canada), Kurtis Sorge, Cam McCaul & Jordie Lunn (Mountain Bike), Ian Hayden & Lee Butler (Snowcross), Ben Milot (FMX), Nic Sauve & Spencer O’brien (Snowboard), Mike Riddle & Phil Casabon (Ski), Rusty Malinoski & Chad Sharpe
(Wake).

Q: Please tell us a little about yourself and how you got to where you are?

DG: I was recruited by ROCKSTAR Inc. in 2007. Prior to that I was the first hire for Red Bull Canada and helped launch the brand in 2004. Collectively I’ve been in the Energy Drink business for nearly 10 years now and it’s truly been a great ride. I enjoy motorsports, action sports and live music so I guess you could say I’m living la Vida ROCKSTAR.

Q: Finally, I think one of the questions a lot of people have is will there be Rockstar girls at the races?

DG: Yes, absolutely! What would a race be without the famous Rockstar Girls right?! We are actually in the process of recruiting Canadian girls now…it’s been fun to say the least!
