Shawn Brault a very talented 8-year-old rider from St-Charles Borromee, Quebec. He started riding when he was only 3-years-old and racing since he was 5-years-old. Shawn has already visited the podium many times, and is definitely moving forward to becoming a future star in Canadian Motocross.
MXP: Hey Shawn, thanks for chatting with me today. What kind bike do you ride and what is your number?
I ride a Cobra 50 and I recently just go a Cobra 65. I have two bikes, one for practice and one for race. I ride with the number 29.
MXP: Do you race in any clubs or series?
I race at the Challenge Quebec Provincial Series in the 50cc 7-8 and 50cc Open classes. Then last weekend I entered the Rockstar Triple Crown Supercross at the Videotron Center in Quebec City, Quebec.
MXP: Yes, I seen you out on the track, you looked amazing. Did you have fun and did you like it?
Yes, I like it so much. It’s a dream for me. I watched the Supercross movie and I said to my parents, “It’s my dream!!” I was a little bit nervous, because this was my first experience on this type of track, but it’s a good stress. I finished with a good result for my first time. I am very proud of myself for my first Supercross race. I finished 7th out of 15 riders. I really appreciated having the chance to race at that kind of event. It’s a dream for me, having the chance to perform on exactly the same track as the Pros. I am looking forward to getting more experience on Supercross tracks, and next year I’ll be able to get better results and maybe get on the podium. It’s very important to work hard to be better.
MXP: Do you have a favourite track that you like riding?
My favourite track is X-Town Motocross. I like this motocross track because I can go there often. On this track I can go fast and make big jumps. This track allows me to practice my techniques that I learned from my coach. I can practice on this track with my brother and father, and this summer with my mother and sister.
MXP: Do you have a hero or someone you look up to?
My hero is my Dad, Yanick Brault. My Dad is always there supporting me and my passion for motocross, and helping me pursue my dreams. From maintaining my bike, getting it ready for my races, I’ll always be totally grateful to him for everything he does for me. My Dad teaches me the importance of working hard and never giving up.
MXP: Who is your favourite rider and why?
My favourite pro rider is Ryan Dungey. He has great technique; technique is very important. He works hard like me and I would like to be as good as him.
MXP: Is there are Canadian rider that you look up to, and why?
My favourite rider is Jean-Sebastien Roy. He worked hard to be successful. I watched a lot of his films to get to know his life and to see his motocross techniques.
MXP: So, since you’re still young and haven’t raced that much, are there any big accomplishments you have achieved?
Last season I finished second at the Challenge Quebec Championship in 50cc 7-8 and 50 cc Open. I am very proud to have finished second in the championship despite missing a race. I am very proud to share my passion and experience with my 5-year-old little brother Hayden, who raced for the first time last season.
MXP: With the 2018 season over, what are your future goals, and what do you think you need to do get there?
Next season I will race two race classes. I will race in 50cc Open and in 65cc for the first time. I would like win the championship in 2019. I will continue to train this winter at the new indoor track to be ready for next season. Also continue to train with my Cobra Moto Elite Team Coach. My parents and my family are always there for me. I know that you have to persevere in life even if there are obstacles. I am always very proud of my results because I always give it 100%.
MXP: What is your favourite part about going to the races?
I love the weekend of racing. Saturday is more relaxed because I practice all day. After that, on Saturday night I can play with my racing friends. Sunday morning I am always nervous before the first race. After the first race, I feel better and I always do my best. I like lining up at the starting gates, and focusing on getting that Holeshot, because that sets the race, get the holeshot and the challenge to stay ahead of everyone else. At the end of a race I love when my parents take me in their arms to congratulate me. After a weekend of racing, if i am lucky enough to win, I like to put my plaques on my wall of in room. I think my mom and dad have to get me a bigger room, I have a lot of plaques and trophies.
MXP: What do like to do when your not racing?
When I am not racing I like to just practice my riding. I always like to ask my dad to take me to the practice track. Now that there is new indoor track near my home I can ride in the winter months, so excited to ride all the time now. Someday I hope my parents take me to ride in Florida or Georgia, where its hot!
When I am not practicing but I like ride my BMX bike, and hangout with my friends.
MXP: Thanks you for taking the time to chat with us today, but one last question, Who would you like to thank?
I would like to thank my Mom for everything she does for me and of course my grandparents Claude and Manon Lafond. I wouldn’t be able to race if it wasn’t for them. They are present at all the races and they are always there to encourage me. I would like to thank my older sister Layla and my younger brother Hayden who always encourages me.
Special thank you to my dad Yanick Brault, TBR Performance, for always being there for me, and being a huge sponsor, without the help from TBR Performance I definitely wouldn’t be racing
