Two years ago, the top motocross riders in the world gathered at one of the most historic tracks on the planet for the 2016 Monster Energy MXoN’s. The Maggiora track, located a triple jump away from Milan, Italy, was also the site of one of the most famous races exactly thirty years before. No one will ever forget the 1986 MXoN’s when Team USA, consisting of David Bailey, Rick Johnson and Johnny O’Mara, dominated all three motos on route to one of their most cherished team victories at this event. If you recall, that day was Johnny O’Mara’s final race for the Factory Honda Team, and then sadly just a few months later, David Bailey suffered his tragic accident.
Three decades later, the MXoN’s was returning to the Maggiora track and Team Canada was back with new management and a very motivated team. Under the guidance of Kourtney Lloyd and Adam Robinson, the team travelled to Italy almost a week prior to get acclimatized and to enjoy the large, rented house the team had in the beautiful Italian countryside. The end result in 2016 was incredible for Team Canada. Not only did they finish inside the top ten in the overall standings but Kaven Benoit had one of the greatest motos ever recorded by a Canadian at this prestigious event. For this week’s Yamaha Motor Canada Behind the Lens we go back to 2016 in Italy for a look at James Lissimore’s amazing photos.
