For this week’s Yamaha Motor Canada Behind the Lens, we head back to Round 9 of the Rockstar Energy Drink MX Nationals in Deschambault, QC. After a month’s worth of rain fell on the Deschambault track in just a few short days prior to Round 9, the sandy soil was left saturated with water when the pros took to the circuit on the Sunday morning. With overcast skies and cool temperatures suffocating the track all day long, it took half the day for things to dry up and for the riders to have a multi-line race surface. However, after two muddy motos to start the day, the second half of the program provided the riders and fans with some of the best racing we had seen all series long.
After winning the opening moto, Colton Facciotti grabbed the early lead in Moto 2 and quickly distanced himself from the pack. One of the sections that Colton was able to nail in those first few laps was the massive double jump down in the valley of the Deschambault track. This double jump is massive to say the least, it has been measured at just over 100 feet from the take-off to the landing. As you can imagine, with the soft conditions the face of this big jump rutted up very quickly and within a few laps, clearing the gap became a very tricky endeavour. But, lap after lap the top MX1 riders, including overall winner Colton Facciotti, cleared the jump.
This James Lissimore photo was taken early during Moto 2 while Facciotti was racing away to victory. As this incredible photo shows, the riders were getting a lot of air time, with very little room for error. This Deschambault double jump has easily become the largest jump the riders have to face during the national series, and for good reason has become a fan (and photographers) favourite.
