Prince George, BC rider Hayden Wolff definitely has a lot of speed and talent for a kid that’s just 14-years-old. In fact, his results in the last few years have cost Kawasaki a lot of money as he’s now won the Team Green Rider of the Year twice. The awesome prize for winning this Team Green Award is a free bike of your choice from Kawasaki. For this week’s Yamaha Motor Canada Amateur Profile we caught up with Hayden Wolff as he and his family were getting ready for Christmas.
MXP: Good Morning Hayden, hope things are good on the west coast. Can you start off by telling us your age and where you call home?
Sure Chris, right now I’m 14 years old and I live in Prince George, B.C.
How long have you lived there?
I have lived in Prince George my whole life. I love it here because there’s so much to do, whether it’s summer or winter.
Prince George definitely is a really cool place. What class do you ride this year and how long have you been riding?
I’ve been riding for five years now and this year I raced in Junior MX2, Junior MX3 and Schoolboy. Next year I will be moving up to the Intermediate MX2, Intermediate MX3 and the Youth class so I’m very excited for that.
I know you had a very exciting 2014 season. What were some of your highlights?
I had a great season this year. I raced in the North and South series in the BCMA and I ended up winning six championships this year racing in the Junior and Schoolboy classes. The best highlight this year was being chosen by Team Green Kawasaki to go to California to test the 2015 KX250F. It was an amazing experience. Also, I just found out that I won the 2014 Team Green Rider of the Year so I’m really excited about that.
That’s amazing Hayden, congratulations. As you said before you’ve been racing for a while. What are some of your past racing highlights?
In 2012, I ended up being the Team Green Rider of the Year and received a 2013 KX250 dirt bike, which was really cool. This past season was definitely my most successful by far. I’m very grateful to everyone that supports me.
So you’ve raced all over BC and you got to ride in California this summer. Do you have a favourite track?
My favourite track is Terrace, B.C. The track is really wide, has a great layout and awesome dirt.
These days almost all of the tracks have a lot of cool obstacles. What parts of the track do you like the most?
I really like the long, wide open sections of a track because I have time to breath.
That’s a cool answer, I’ve never heard that one before. If you had to pick a favourite jump on any track what would it be?
I would have to say my favourite jump would be the staircase at the Terrace track, it’s so much fun!
Before the race do you like things calm or do you like things to be rocking?
I definitely like things calm and quiet before I race.
What are you usually thinking about while the thirty second board is up?
Usually my adrenaline is pumping and all I’m thinking is “Let’s try and get the holeshot.”
I love how off the track you’re a quiet kid but as soon as you put on a helmet you’re a fierce competitor. Would you rather holeshot and win or come from behind and win?
Definitely I would rather holeshot and win. It doesn’t always work that way but it sure makes it easier. (laughs)
Yes, and with you moving to the Intermediate class and then most likely the Pro class after that, holeshots are going to be harder to get. Does everyone at your school know you race dirt bikes?
I have a lot of friends that I go to school with that ride dirt bikes. On a Monday after a race, people always ask me how I did on the weekend, so yes it’s pretty common knowledge at my school that I race.
What is your favourite subject at school?
My favourite subjects at school would be math and P.E., but in the end, P.E. would be my favourite. Are you surprised by that? (laughs)
Yes, I never would’ve guessed that a MX rider would love gym class. What is your favourite thing to do other than ride a dirt bike?
We get a fair amount of snow in Prince George, so I go snowboarding as much as I can.
Okay Hayden, final question. Who would you like to thank?
I would like to thank Cycle North Power Sports, Kourtney Lloyd for all of the support that she gives me and my family, Canadian Kawasaki, Dave and Sue Carlyle, Doris Steele, Troy Lee Designs, 100% Goggles, Parts Canada, RMR Suspension/H2R Distributing, K9 Country Pet Resort, Mongoose Machine, Atlas Braces, Maverick Distributing, Northern Gateway, Sunset Glass, Direct Automotive, Inline Automotive, my sister Jordyn and of course my Mom and Dad for all of their support.
