What is turning out to be a great road trip to Southern California to get some much needed mid-winter vitamin D and catch a couple of rounds of the Monster Energy Supercross series has reached week two. The series and the current getaway I am on has exceeded any expectations or preconceived notions I could have placed upon it beyond imagination. Spending the first seven days in Anaheim was beyond cool. To stay at a hotel that overlooked Angel Stadium allowing immediate access to interact with the assembling and dispersal of the series combatants was very cool. Also, a few extra days spent to reflect on the weekend’s racing, and hitting up some of the local world renowned beaches has my battery once again fully charged and looking forward to Saturday night’s racing at Petco Park.

The 2015 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series visits Petco Park in beautiful downtown San Diego, Ca for the first time.

Before I move on from Anaheim I would like to thank Johnny Grant and Kevin Tyler from the MX-101 crew as they were kind enough to send my wife and I a dinner invite via Dylan Wright on the eve of the big race in Anaheim. The crew at MX-101 had an incentive based contest and awarded the winners with a full factory ride-like, all expense paid tour of the Anaheim race along with many other cool industry related stops. KT did all the cooking at the home they rented. Kevin you’re hired buddy, my wife and I enjoyed it thoroughly, thank you.

I headed to San Diego on Wednesday with a detour to Pala Raceway and was hoping I would run into one or some of the Supercross Series competitors looking to spin some practice laps in the sunshine. I got my wish as the guy at the gate informed me that Josh Hill was there. Josh had already put in a couple of solid motos by the time we showed up but remained focused as he and his father, Monte, were working together on some technique that Josh felt needed improvement. I was stoked that upon pulling up Josh recognized me and treated us all at the conclusion of his session with Windham-like transfers, which I quickly videoed and uploaded to my Canadian Moto Show Instagram account. I was also pretty stoked to get a quick podcast with Josh and his thoughts on a good number of things including the possibility of returning to Canada. He admitted to setting the bar lower than usual heading into this Supercross season but is now ready to build on his 10th in Anaheim and achieve the type of results that will keep him and his connections smiling.

It was great to chat with Vickie Golden as she’s very excited to begin the East Lites SX Series next week in Dallas.

San Diego is ready for the first ever race at Petco Park the home of the San Diego Padres, and unlike Tiger Woods bailing on the start of today’s Farmers Insurance Open here at his home course of Torrey Pines, I know Saturday night’s event will deliver. I spent the day at the stadium. Petco Park might as well be called the ‘Padres’ Nest’ as it is tightly shoe horned into the downtown core on the west side of town near San Diego Harbour. The pit parking is quite unusual here as there is a fair bit of separation between the stadium and where the big rigs are situated. I spent the better part of the afternoon chatting with many riders and got a couple of great interviews with Vicki Golden and Brett Metcalfe. Vicki was on the track for the cameras and was a lot of fun to talk to as she prepares to become the first women to compete for a position under the Supercross Lites class in Texas next weekend.

It was also very cool to chat with veteran Brett Metcalfe, who over and above being a world class rider is a top shelf human being who is and always has time for his fans. It was good to get Brett’s take on the track surface and layout as this is the first time Supercross will be raced in Petco Park as the event was previously held at Qualcomm Stadium. Brett admitted the soil, even though it was what they used last year, was a little rocky, but he expected by Saturday’s main events it would most likely be hard packed and technical. Brett was also very excited to chat about the upcoming outdoor season in Canada and is very much looking forward to being a part of the Monster Energy Leading Edge Kawasaki Team this summer. The interviews with Brett, Vicki Golden and Josh Hill can be listened to at http://www.canadianmotoshow.com.

In my opinion Brett Metcalfe is one of the classiest people in our sport. As always we had a good chat on press day and he told me how excited he is to come back this summer to Canada.

I am very much looking forward to this weekend as this series continues to branch out each weekend with new side plots, and there is a lot at stake. The West series is not quite as tight as it was and anyone that wants to have anything to say about Cooper Webb pulling away will have to step it up tomorrow night. I am not sure exactly what his result will be but I believe the writing is on the wall for Josh Hansen to have his best round so far of the series. I have talked to Josh and many of those close to him and he believes we will see the best yet from him tomorrow night. Love him or hate him I give him full marks for his efforts in the face of everyone that said he could not or was not serious. I don’t know about you but I love comeback stories.

In the big bike class, I was happy to see Ryan Dungey’s hard work and endurance of all the negative comments and attention he has endured pay off, and I believe ‘The Diesel’ will continue to do what he does best this weekend. I also do believe that if Eli Tomac has any kind of luck he has a good chance to stand on the top step of the podium tomorrow night after 20 laps. That may seem like a bold assumption but I watched Eli like a hawk last weekend, and to me had a little more than everyone else on the track minus the start. Also, Jason Anderson told me today that he was feeling great and looked to improve on the previous week in Anaheim where things did not go the way he wanted. I cannot wait for the gate drop on round six. Let’s go racing.

Until next week’s ‘Friday Flight’…

Brent ‘Airmail’ Worrall out.
