Podium third for Dungey; retains points lead after Supercross Round Six

Red Bull KTM Factory rider Ryan Dungey delivered an impressive third place finish at the sixth round of the AMA Supercross in San Diego and remains points leader in the 450-class championship

Dungey, a Red Bull athlete had great qualifying times in the afternoon practice sessions and went into the heat race with plenty of confidence. He nearly pulled the holeshot at the start of his heat, but got pinched off at the tail end of the start straight. A mistake in a rhythm section shortly after dropped him to fourth place. He quickly rebounded but still went on the finish fourth to automatically transfer to the main event.

He was fifth out of the gates in his main event but quickly moved into third by the third lap of the race. He then concentrated on trying to close the gap on the top two riders but crossed the line in that position and leaves the round with a nine point lead in the competition.

“I felt really good tonight,” remarked Dungey. “Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get up there and battle with the leaders but I am very happy for the podium finish tonight. My bike is working great and I’m looking forward to heading east.” Dungey rides the KTM 450 SX-F Factory Edition.

KTM rider Andrew Short had a solid ride to finish eighth in this very competitive field.

250-class disappointing for Red Bull KTM’s Justin Hill

While it was not a happy night for Red Bull KTM Factory Team rider Justin Hill who crashed at the start of his main event and did not finish the race, KTM rider Shane Mcelrath finished on the podium in second. Fellow KTM rider Jessy Nelson also came in at eighth.

Hill had started the day well with an impressive win in his heat race where he pulled the holeshot, had a three-second lead at the halfway point and picked up the win to transfer to the main event.

He had a decent jump out of the gate but crashed with another rider at the end of the start straight. His leg was run over in the crash. Hill, worried that his ankle may be broken, pulled off the track to seek medical attention. The medics determined the ankle was not broken, but most likely, severely sprained. Hill will seek further medical attention on Monday.

Nelson stays at second in the 250-class points for the West Coat series, Mcelrath is at fifth and Hill is at seventh place.

The series will now head to Dallas, TX for the first round of the East 250 SX Championship. Hill’s teammate, Marvin Musquin, will suit up for the first time this year in pursuit of that title.
