Like every year, the anticipation was at an all time high as the riders gathered at Angel Stadium for the opening round of the 2016 Monster Energy Supercross Series. With so many riders capable of winning, tensions were high in both classes as the talented field jockeyed for track position during each main event. In the end, Cooper Webb and Jason Anderson both came from behind to win their main events and show that they’re ready to win in 2016. For a closer look at the action from A1, here are a collection of photos from Frank Hoppen.

The big ‘A’ provided a perfect backdrop for the opening round of the 2016 Monster Energy Supercross.

After missing alot of time with the injuries he suffered in Detroit last season. Jake Weimer was back at Anaheim 1 and rode to a safe 12th overall in the main event.

Eli Tomac was another rider who was coming back from a very serious injury. Anaheim 1 was also Tomac’s first time racing his brand new Monster Energy Kawasaki. The Colorado native rode very smart and finished 4th in the 450SX class.

Broc Tickle and Jake Weimer are two riders who will be using these first few rounds to find their place in this competitive series.

Jessy Nelson led the Lites main event early but wasn’t able to hold off the hard charging Cooper Webb. Nelson is now doubtful for San Diego after a high speed crash this week during practice.

Like Nelson in the Lites class, Cole Seely led the 450SX class for a few laps before being reeled in by Jason Anderson. Seely rode great and was able to hold on for a podium finish.

Zach Osborne was fast all day in Anaheim and when all was said and done, Zacho put his Rockstar Husqvarna on the podium.

Dean Wilson was another rider who was returning to competition after sitting out for a long time with an injury. Although Dean rode a little tight in the main event, he still was able to finish a solid 9th overall.

After getting a great start in the main event, James Stewart tangled with Ryan Dungey and ended up hitting the ground hard. James would DNF and is very doubtful for round two this weekend.

Justin Barcia came into round one with very high hopes, however the popular Yamaha rider had a frustrating night and ended up finishing in 15th place.

By the looks of how Chad Reed rode on Saturday night, the 33 year old Australian is very comfortable on his new Yamaha.

It was awesome to watch the ‘King of Supercross’ Jeremy McGrath put on an air show during one of the intermissions.

After getting taken out by Trey Canard early in the main event, Ryan Dungey rode like a champion and clawed his way back up to second place.

Cole Thompson did a great job of feeling his way through the opening round. After a bad start in the main event, Cole rode smart and finished 18th. Look for him to be much more comfortable this weekend in San Diego.
