Yamaha Motor Canada Presents Behind the Lens From Popkum

As the riders and teams gathered in beautiful Popkum, BC for Round 2 of the Rockstar Energy Triple Crown MXTour, everyone was very excited to race at one of the series’ new tracks. Located at the base of the one of the nearby mountains, the Popkum track had a great layout but lacked a decent amount of top soil. The crew did their best to give the riders a good race track, however they were at the mercy of the dirt, and also the bright sunshine. Despite the dry conditions, the racing at Round 2 was excellent as the riders battled hard all-day long. In the end, the it was once again Jess Pettis taking the overall in the 250 Pro/Am class and Colton Facciotti doing the same in the 450 class. These two riders will take the points lead and the red plates into Round 3 next weekend in Prince George, BC. For this week’s Yamaha Motor Canada “Behind the Lens,” we look back to the racing at Popkum with these incredible James Lissimore photos.

Shawn Maffenbeier and Jess Pettis battled hard in both 250 Pro/ Am motos at Round 2.

You have to be fast to get your hands on some custom nose pieces.

The 250 Pro/ Am class featured a four rider battle for the lead in both motos.

Yes, the roost hurt at Round 2.

Colton Facciotti dominated the second 450 moto and took the overall win in the process.

Joey Crown rode smoothly at Round 2 and finished 4th overall.

Cole Thompson and Matt Goerke took some time after Moto 2 to discuss who had more tear-offs left.

Vince Friese was in Popkum to cheer on his buddy Mike Alessi.

Tarah Gieger showed up at Round 2 and dominated both Women’s West motos.

JSR can’t be too happy with how the first two rounds have gone for his KTM team.

The surrounding scenery in Popkum was beautiful.

Tyler Medaglia had a decent day at Round 2 finishing a strong third in Moto 2.

Ryan Lockhart was at Round 2 spinning the wrenches for visiting Englishman Jake Nichols.

Jake Nichols was very fast at Round 2 and found himself on the podium at the end of the day.

Josh Osby has been very fast in the opening rounds, and if he keeps up this speed will win a moto very soon.

There were a few tense moments prior to the opening 250 Pro/Am class as Jared Petruska suffered a flat tire on the sight lap.

Even after battling for two straight motos, Maffenbeier and Pettis were still able to have a friendly chat on the way back to the paddock.

So far in 2018, Colton Facciotti has been very tough to beat.

The track in Popkum certainly didn’t lack some spectacular views.

The ground in Popkum is about to shake for the first time with the sound of forty 450 machines.

Under the right conditions, Popkum could be a good national track.

Cole Thompson rode the rear wheel of Matt Goerke for the entire second moto before making a last lap pass for fourth place.

Considering this was a new track to the national series, the Popkum crew did a good job getting everything ready.

As you can see in this photo, the layout for Round 2 was both fun and technical.

So far in 2018, Dylan Wright has had the worst luck. During the second moto in Popkum, Wright was running fourth before a rock put a big hole in his radiator.

Even though he’s suffered two DNFs in the first four motos of 2018, Wright has the best hair in the 250 Pro/Am class.
