During these unprecedented times of self-isolation and social distancing, all of our kids are now forced to remain at home during the week as their school year has been postponed or cancelled completely. Also, with no racing until May at the earliest, our motocross kids are now sitting in limbo waiting for their next competition. To get an idea of what some of our talented kids are doing during this lock down, we will be reaching out to a few of them over the next couple of weeks. First up is young Alberta rider Dexter Seitz.
MXP: Hey Dex, I hope you and your family have been staying safe and healthy. Tell us, what has been your daily routine since this self-isolation and social distancing began?
It doesn’t really feel like much of a routine right now. I’m actually feeling like a teenager, waking up around 10am to bacon and eggs because my Mom is home to cook (laughs). Then I usually grab my phone to check Instagram before my Mom yells at me to do homework for an hour. My family and I then do a workout to stay in shape and then I sneak upstairs to eat nachos before my parents catch me. I’ve also been playing a lot of finger skateboards, Face Timing friends, playing outside on our RZR and doing a lot of walks with our dogs. We still have so much snow in Calgary so we cannot do much outside. Oh, and then I end my day with watching moto videos and teaching my Mom how to do TikToks.
MXP: Well, that sounds like a pretty full day. Okay, let’s assume you’re missing school at least a little. Every kid misses school, right? What do you miss most about going to school?
I’m the weird kid that actually likes school. I think it’s because I always miss so much school already because of racing that this doesn’t seem weird to me; except that I’m home and not riding. My teacher is so cool this year. Her husband grew up racing motocross so she is really supportive and shares my racing videos and results to the class. I miss her and socializing with my buddies, for sure!
MXP: Have you still been able to get some training in? What type of training have you been doing?
I’m lucky because we have a full gym in our house, and my Mom is a trainer so she has created different workouts for me each day and keeps them fun. I’m starting to really get into them. Other than that, we have so much snow here that I can’t ride my tracks, so we went cross country riding in the mountains last week and I loved it! There are some tracks open a few hours from our house, but I’m thinking the mountains is the best place to ride and keep that social distance for now.
MXP: What do you miss most about being at the motocross track?
Pounding motos with my buddies, for sure! I love my KTM65, and this is my last year racing in the 65cc class so I have a lot of goals set. Right now, I’m really worried I won’t be able to accomplish them with the Corona Virus. All the Loretta Lynn qualifiers have been cancelled, as well as the Supercross Futures and some of our local races. I’m just praying all this will end soon for everyone and we can get back to a normal life.
MXP: Final question, in case you haven’t been keeping up with your studies, here is a math question for you. If 40 riders start a race, but 5 end up going down in the first turn, of those 5 riders, 3 remount and get back into the race. Sadly, three riders then crash in the whoops and DNF. How many riders finish this race?
35, right? Where’s the trick in this question?
MXP: Good job Dex! Take care and stay healthy!
