This past weekend, the 2024 Australian Supercross Series kicked off just outside Brisbane, Australia. Even though this series takes place in a different hemisphere, there are still a lot of familiar names on the starting line in both the SX1 and SX2 classes. Riders like Dean Wilson, Joey Savatgy, Aaron Tanti, and of course, our SX hero Cole Thompson are all there going for this prestigious championship. This is Cole’s third season racing the Australian SX Series, so he’s quite cognizant of how everything works and, most importantly, how the racing on the track is. Cole knows that racing on a tight track and with shorter main events, you have to be aggressive, especially when you’re not upfront off the start.
On the opening night of racing, Cole traded paint with several riders, which caused him to finish off of the podium. Thankfully, he came back on the second night of racing to claim second overall aboard his Honda Racing CRF250R. After the opening weekend, Cole sits second overall in the SX2 class and will now wait a few weeks for Round 3 in Wollongong. In the SX1 class, it was another Honda duo up front as Dean Wilson and Joey Savatgy traded wins on Saturday and Sunday. All of the SX1 main events provided fans with some exciting racing as all of the top riders were trying to set the tone early in this 2024 SX Series. After two rounds, the Honda Racing Team appears to be the team to beat as they came away with the points lead in both classes heading into the next race.
