British rider Max Anstie won the opening round of the Australian 250 Supercross championship after taking the lead in the second corner and taking the main event night one win Melbourne, Australia.
The 29 year old finished sixth at the opening round of the World supercross, in Cardiff, Wales a couple of weeks ago and was a favourite coming into the night, but Canadian Cole Thompson made the night exciting.
The race started with Anstie moving quickly to the lead with Nathan Crawford second and Cole Thompson in pursuit.
Anstie was five seconds ahead of Thompson who moved past Crawford. At about half way Thompson started to catch Anstie and really closed up on the British rider. However, Anstie recoup and was able to hold on for the win.
Cole Thompson: “It was a tough track, I was good in the heats and I really like the track here. I battled Crawford early on and made a charge on Anstie, but second is a good finish. It is a big achievement being here as a Canadian, not too many Canadians get to show what we can do on a stage like this — I am really excited.”
