For this week’s Yamaha Motor Canada Behind the Lens we go back to Round 9 in Deschambault and one of the greatest riding performances of the summer. Coming into Deschambault, Kawasaki rider Ryan Surratt had been the model of consistency, finishing outside of the Top 5 only once during the prior eight rounds of the MX2 series. Despite the rain falling and track conditions deteriorating, Ryan Surratt put on a riding display that left everyone in attendance shaking their heads in amazement.
Leading up to Round 9, Surratt had been riding well all summer long and as I mentioned above, he was a consistent Top 5 finisher. However, prior to Deschambault he had yet to visit the podium and no one thought of him as a threat to win an MX2 moto. But, that all changed when Surratt holeshotted the opening moto and never looked back. Surratt soldiered his way through the deep sandy mud, zigged and zagged around the lappers, and grabbed his first moto win of the 2017 season.
When the gate dropped for Moto 2, Surratt pulled off another holeshot and quickly turned his second race of the day into a carbon copy of the first. After some late moto pressure from rookie phenom Tanner Ward, Surratt held on for his second moto win of the day, and of course his first ever MX2 overall victory.
It was an incredible day for Surratt and one that quickly vaulted him into contention for the 2017 MX2 Championship heading into the following weekend in Barrie, ON. Whether it was the rain, the mud, or just a perfect day of riding, Ryan Surratt’s race at Deschambault will stand out as one of the best performances of the season!
