MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (November 22, 2019) – MX Sports, producer of the 39th Annual AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship, presented by Lucas Oil, is pleased to announce the 2020 Area Qualifiers and Regional Championships schedule. The qualifying program will start up mid-February with Area Qualifiers followed by Regional Championships taking place in late May through the month of June.
As qualifying starts in Arizona and Louisiana, the program will take place in 33 different states throughout the country beginning with over 50 Area Qualifiers where riders must finish in the top positions listed in the supplemental rules depending on their region. After qualifying through an area, riders will move onto the 13 Regional Championships that run through eight major geographical regions in the United States.
“We have assembled the best racetracks and the best organizers in America to produce the 2020 AMA Amateur National Championship area qualifier schedule,” said MX Sports Director Tim Cotter. “The competition between the hundreds of AMA racetracks in the country is very fierce. Each AMA track aspires to host one of these coveted events. The 51 Area Qualifier and 13 Regional Championship organizers are eager to greet the best amateur motocross riders in the world as they embark on their journey to The National Championship.”
Area Qualifiers serve as the first step in qualifying for the world’s largest and most prestigious amateur motocross championship. The Regional Championships then serve as the next step to seed riders into the National Championship. Only riders who finish in a qualifying position at a Regional Championship are eligible to race during the National Championship starting on Monday, August 3 through Saturday, August 8.
“When you look at the partnership between the AMA and MX Sports that spans more than 35 years, it’s hard not to feel a sense of pride in what those before you have accomplished,” said AMA Director of Racing Kevin Crowther. “The AMA National Motocross Championship continues to be the bar that all others try to reach, and we look forward to working with MX Sports and all of the organizers involved in the program. From the first gate drop to the last checkered flag, it looks to be a very exciting season.”
Once again this year’s lineup includes many Pro Motocross tracks that have become a crucial part of the Road to Loretta’s. From historic tracks including Budds Creek Motocross Park and High Point Raceway in the Northeast to Washougal MX Park in the Northwest, these National tracks offer amateur racers a chance to race on the same track as the professionals in the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship circuit. The program also returns to many other favorites such as Unadilla MX, Ironman Raceway, RedBud MX and Muddy Creek Raceway along with WW Ranch Motocross Park. Mill Creek returns for a Southeast Area Qualifier on April 4 and 5, while Swan MX will run May 9 and 10 for a South Central Area Qualifier.
Brand new additions to the 2020 Area Qualifier schedule include Pagoda Motocross hosting an Area Qualifier in May for the Northeast, while Mesquite Motocross Park rejoins the lineup for the Southwest Region. Malvern MX makes a comeback on April 25 and 26 for a Mid-East Area Qualifier, while Reynard Raceway returns to the schedule with a South Central Area Qualifier on May 16 and 17. Fox Raceway in Pala, California will host the Southwest Youth and Amateur Regional Championship on May 30 and 31.
The 39th annual AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship, presented by Lucas Oil, will take place Monday, August 3 through Saturday, August 8 at Loretta Lynn Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee.
