Five important updates riders need to know heading into the 2027 season

Jetwerx Inc. has completed its annual review of the Triple Crown Series Rulebook ahead of the 2027 season.

Following discussions with riders, teams, promoters and officials, several updates have been made with the goal of simplifying regulations, improving rider safety and creating clearer eligibility standards across the Canadian National program.

Here are five of the main changes riders should be aware of for 2027.

1. INTERMEDIATE RIDERS — NO NATIONAL UPGRADE POINTS

Beginning in 2027, upgrade points will no longer be awarded to Intermediate riders competing in Pro National events.

Intermediate remains the classification immediately preceding Professional. Riders must be a minimum of 14 years of age at the time of the event to compete in a Pro National.

This change allows Intermediate riders to gain experience at the National level without accumulating upgrade points simply by competing in a Pro Am National.

2. TWO-STROKE / FOUR-STROKE DISPLACEMENT

For 2027, the Triple Crown Series will move to equal displacement limits regardless of whether a motorcycle is two-stroke or four-stroke.

For the 450 Professional class:

251cc–450cc two-stroke or four-stroke motorcycles will be permitted.

Electric motorcycles, including motorcycles such as the Stark VARG, must continue to receive approval from the series before competition.

The same equal-displacement philosophy will apply within the appropriate displacement limits of the 250 class.

3. CHEST AND BACK PROTECTION MANDATORY

Beginning in 2027, approved chest and back protection will be mandatory at Triple Crown Pro Nationals.

The protector may be worn underneath or over the rider’s jersey and should provide protection for the sternum, anterior ribs, posterior ribs and spine from T1 to T12.

The change is part of an increased focus on rider safety and follows the direction being taken by major racing organizations internationally.

4. TOP-10 PRO RIDERS — AMATEUR NATIONAL ELIGIBILITY

Eligibility rules for professionally ranked riders competing at Canada’s major Amateur Nationals have been clarified for 2027.

A rider who is inside the Top 10 in current Triple Crown Series points in either the 250 or 450 class at the time of the event will not be eligible to compete in Amateur National classes.

For events taking place before current-season standings have been established, the previous season’s final series standings will be used as the starting reference.

Professionally ranked riders outside the Top 10 remain eligible for applicable age classes under the regulations outlined in the Rulebook.

Intermediate-ranked riders remain eligible for applicable amateur, age and Pro/Am classes.

Professional riders are also encouraged to participate in approved entertainment and fan-engagement activities at Amateur National events, including holeshot challenges and other special events.

5. CAREER NATIONAL NUMBERS

Beginning in 2027, the Triple Crown Series will revise how Career National Numbers are earned and retained.

Career National Numbers will be reserved for:

• Riders who have won a Canadian National Championship.
• Riders who finish Top 3 overall in the 450 National Championship.
• Riders who currently hold an existing  or earned a Career National Number through the end of the 2026 season will be grandfathered into the new system.

The objective is to make Career National Numbers more meaningful and ensure they represent significant accomplishments within Canadian National competition.

The WMX National number system will also be updated for 2027, with numbers awarded to the Top 10 overall finishers, allowing recognition and prestige for the leading riders in the WMX National Championship.
