Walton Raceway hosted the final rounds of the Royal Distributing Canadian Cross Country Championship East this past weekend. A new extended course was set up for the two day event including a brand new technical trail section for the Pro and advanced riders.
Scattered showers on Saturday created a slippery course that had everyone on their toes and make for constant lead changes in many of the classes. Saturday featured the Moto XC format – two one hour motos. Going into the last lap of the second moto Honda’s Jason Schrage had a very narrow lead over Honda’s Nathan Bless and Yamaha’s Brian Wojnarowski. Jason knew he had to charge hard to stay ahead for the win but the slippery conditions put him on the ground in the woods allowing the other two past him and Nathan ended up across the line first but Wojo took overall win on Saturday with his 2 –2 finish.
Unfortunately Pro rider Josh Long who won the first moto and was out to an early lead in the second moto had a hard get off on the MX track and suffered some injuries that took him out of action for the weekend. We all wish him a speedy recovery.
Janice Snivley was the big winner in the Women’s class on Saturday with both the win and the $100 Wiesner Insurance Fastest Lap award for her class.
There was an epic battle in the Beginner class between Kyle Bichard (pictured), Adam Dickie and Kyle Mclennan. Adam took the winon Saturday and Kyle on Sunday.
With 13 Pro riders on the line Yamaha’s Zach Lewis put in a strong ride both days with a pair of 4th place finishes.
Sunday the skies cleared and a light wind quickly dried up the course and made for a very different set of conditions and faster lap times in all classes. Sunday featured the classice XC format with 2 hour races, 2.5 for Pro’s.
In the Pro class the drier conditions helped GDR Honda’s Nathan Bles to pick up his speed but Yamaha’s Brian Wojnarowski and Honda’s Jason Schrage kept him honest and they finished very close behind him with Jason in second and Wojo in 3rd.
Honda’s Jason Schrage was happy to make the podium both days – he commented that the Walton course with its technical woods sections and log obstacles was better suited to his riding style and leveled the playing field for the MX and off road guys.
As always lots of excitement in the Pee Wee Class. Walton provided an excellent off road course for the kids to ride – part of it was the same track the big guys raced on. Connor Taplay took the win both days over his brother Nathan, Jake Alton took third.
