Well for the fourth weekend in row I was lucky to spend some time flying over this great Country of ours to attend round 4 of the 2015 Rockstar Energy Drink Motocross Nationals. I was supposed to fly to Regina on Saturday morning but because the final ANQ at Walton Raceway being reschedule to Saturday also, I decided to take my son racing at Walton and then fly to Regina late Saturday night.
The racing at Walton was great as finally the weather co-operated and the track was in perfect racing condition. It’s always exciting heading to Walton Raceway and getting a glimpse at the same facility that will host the 2015 Parts Canada TransCan later this summer. With this race also being the final ANQ of the season, the pressure was a little higher as the riders battled for the final few spots. With my son racing I was only able to catch a few of the races, however it was great to see some of Ontario’s top young riders battle on the Walton track. Kids like Austin Watling and Jake Tricco are riding at a very high level now and I hope they can continue it all summer long. From one great event in Ontario to another, this coming weekend is the final two rounds of the 2015 Moto Park Cup. With even more trophies, prizes and events planned for this weekend, Moto Park is definitely the place to be in Ontario for the final weekend of June.
It’s definitely hard to believe that the West rounds are now history for 2015. From Kamloops to this past weekend in Regina, we got to witness some pretty great battles in both the MX1 class and the MX2 class. Yesterday in Regina was no different as the series top riders battled on the slippery Moto Valley track. Right from the beginning of the day the dark clouds surrounded the circuit and just as the riders were lining up for their first motos, the sky let loose and the rain began falling. Although it didn’t rain hard, it was enough to turn the tacky dark soil into a slippery mess for the first set of motos. However, soon after the fans got to watch Kaven Benoit and Brett Metcalfe dominate the first two motos of the day, the rain miraculously stopped and the track began to dry out.
For the start of the second MX2 moto it was still a little slippery in some sections and the first rider to suffer was points leader Kaven Benoit, who washed his front end out in the valley section and was forced to start his moto in 17th. Up front GDR Honda rider Jeremy Medaglia grabbed the early lead and looked very motivated to take his first win of the season. For entire thirty minute moto Medaglia fought off a hard charging Jimmy Decotis to eventually take the win. It was great to see Jeremy back on top of the podium for the moto and if it wasn’t for his first moto sixth, Jeremy might have had a shot at the overall victory. However, with the ever consistent Decotis going 2-2 in both motos, the Yamaha rider grabbed the MX2 overall, his first since round one in Kamloops. Benoit remounted and put on an incredible charge and got all the way to a very admirable 6th place in moto 2. That gave the red plate holder a 4th overall on the day and he will take the points leader into round five at Gopher Dunes.

If you take away Jimmy Decotis’s DNF in Nanaimo, the MX2 points battle would be very close. I feel like the battle in the East is going to be pretty special between all of the top MX2 riders. In Regina Jimmy went 2-2 and took his second overall win of the season. photo by James Lissimore

While it might not be one the riders favourite tracks, the Moto Valley circuit was in great shape for Sunday’s race. photo by James Lissimore

For the final 15 minutes of the second MX1 moto, Colton Facciotti and Cole Thompson battled for the final podium spot in Regina. I can tell you from being trackside that this is how close the two Canadian riders were for ten laps. photo by James Lissimore

Next to Moncton, the start in Regina is the scariest of the series as some of the MX1 riders were hitting fourth gear before having to turn right. Here Bobby Kiniry and Tyler Medaglia show that they have no fear as they holeshot moto 2. photo by James Lissimore

For those of you who weren’t in Regina yesterday, this is how close Matt Goerke and Brett Metcalfe were for pretty much the entire second MX1 moto. photo by James Lissimore

Although he won the second moto battle yesterday, the #101 just missed out on the overall win. However, Matt Goerke proved that he doesn’t want to give up the red plate anytime soon.photo by James Lissimore
In the MX1 class the second moto battle for the lead between Brett Metcalfe and Matt Goerke was once again very exciting. For almost the entire moto these two riders were only feet apart as they waged their battle. Lap after lap these two riders went at it, at first Metcalfe closed in on Goerke at the halfway and it looked as though he was just going motor past for his fourth moto win of the season. However, as soon as Metty got close, Goerke dug deep and found a little more speed. As I mentioned in my live Twitter posts yesterday, Goerke seemed faster on one half of the track and Metty on the other. As the two riders threaded the needle between the sometime annoying lapped riders, Metty almost had the pass made but Goerke simply refused to let him by. As the laps dwindled down for the MX1 riders, so apparently did Metcalfe’s tear-off allotment as with two laps to go he could be seen wiping his goggles with his hand in mid-air. In the end he had to settle for second as the overall win was still his. For Goerke, this moto had to give him a huge boost of confidence as he was able to do what very few riders have been able to do in Canada, that is hold off a hard charging Brett Metcalfe. Since both riders have demonstrated incredible sand skills in the past, the battle in the East could be the best we’ve ever seen. Also, add in the fact that Colton Facciotti seems to be healthy and getting faster by the moto and we all know how good Tyler Medaglia and Cole Thompson are in the East. These next six rounds are going to be epic and I think this title is going to go down to the final moto at round ten in Walton.

While hometown boy Shawn Maffenbeier wasn’t able to get a win yesterday in Regina, he did ride with alot of heart to finish third overall in the MX2 class. This awesome photo by James Lissimore also shows how threatening the skies were all day.
So that was my weekend full of motocross excitement, with the Moto Park Cup this coming weekend it’s just motocross, motocross, motocross for the Pomeroy Family. I hope all the awesome Dad’s out there had a great Father’s Day yesterday. I loved seeing all of the posts on Social Media with older photos of kids with their Dads. That’s it for me this week, everyone please have a safe week and I’ll see you Friday at Moto Park!
