Fox Canada Presents Isolation Inquiries With Mars Millar

During these unprecedented times of self-isolation and social distancing, all of our kids are now forced to remain at home during the week as their school year has been postponed or cancelled completely. Also, with no racing until May at the earliest, our motocross kids are now sitting in limbo waiting for their next competition. To get an idea of what some of our talented kids are doing during this lock down, we will be reaching out to a few of them over the next couple of weeks. Next up is Alberta 65cc rider Mars Millar.

MXP: Hey Mars, I hope you and your family are doing well. These are definitely crazy times. What has your daily routine been since this self-isolation and social distancing began?

Well for the first two weeks was pretty much like a holiday. Staying up late, sleeping in, eating lots, watching movies, playing games online with my moto buddies, Instagram. Then I did a couple of cool hikes with my dad, we went on one ride in the woods which was awesome.

Now we have settled into more of a program, I have school work online for a few hours in morning, then I do a workout in our little home gym, then my dad has me do some chores. After that I usually play some video games online with buddies. My dad also comes home for lunch and to make sure I’m doing what I’m supposed to.

MXP: It sounds as though you’re staying busy. Okay, let’s assume you’re missing school at least a little. Every kid misses school right. What do you miss most about going to school?

Well actually…. I do miss school! I miss hanging with my friends, seeing my teachers, interacting with people, just the routine of it all. I am not the biggest fan of this online learning, I like being in class and having the teacher there to help if I get stumped on questions or something.

MXP: Also, it’s good that you’re still doing some training. What type of training have you been doing?

Well I’m lucky, we have a small home gym that I can go down to anytime to put in a session. My dad usually gives me a circuit to do and it can get pretty intense. We have a lot of trails to run and hike right from our door so that is really awesome and convenient. My favourite thing is the rowing machine, it’s a great all round workout great for Moto training.

MXP: What do you miss most about being at the motocross track?

OMG, where do I start? I just miss going to the track and seeing all my crew and ripping my dirt bike. Moto is my life. This is by far the worst part of this Covid-19 pandemic. This is my final year on a 65cc and I had some big goals I wanted to achieve. Races are being cancelled all over the place and my season seems to be in jeopardy. With all of the preparation that I put in over the winter I was really excited for spring and for our season to begin. It’s safe to say that I’m pretty bummed. I understand they are doing this to keep us safe and that all of this is bigger than racing. But hopefully things will keep improving and we’ll get to have a race season still.

MXP: I guess all you can do is just keep working hard on school and on your training, and just keep being patient. So Mars, in case you haven’t been keeping up with your studies here is a math question for you. If 40 riders start a race, but 5 end up going down in the first turn. Three of those riders remount and get back into the race. Then three riders crash in the whoops and DNF. How many riders finish this race?

The answer is 35!
