In last week’s Fitness Tip I provided you with a few Challenge workouts and I was pleased to hear from a bunch of you!! Thanks for the emails and sharing how the workouts went. As promised this week I will share with you some tips to help you approach these workouts. These tips can be used to help you approach all large and daunting tasks and or goals.
I mentioned above that I had heard from some readers concerning some of the workouts and it was interesting to hear most of the say, 1000 Burpees!!! Or Burpee broad-jump for 1 mile!! In most cases people were looking at the workout in its totality. Sure 1000 Burpees is a lot, and so is 1 mile of burpee broad jumps!! The first step in overcoming large obstacles or large tasks is to break it down into smaller achievable goals. For example with the 1000 Burpees, can you do 10 burppes non-stop? Get a white board out. Every tick that you put on this white board will represent 10 completed reps. While doing the workout, don’t focus on what you have left. Complete the task right in front of you, in this case 10 burpees. If you focus on the fact that you have a lot of reps a head of you, anxiety builds, self doubt creeps in and you start thinking about quitting.
There are times when this will happen no matter how well you try and focus on the simple steps, take a second, take a few deep breaths and use a mantra or visualization to stop the negativity. A mantra is a saying that you either say in your head, or heck you can shout it out loud. We use a couple at Evolved, “Ain’t dead, can’t quit!!” or “I’m looking good, I’m feeling good, damn I should be in Hollywood!!”.
These mantras help get you into a positive mind frame, and allow you to get back into the zone and focus on the next task at hand. So give it a try and pick one of the workouts. Come up with a plan, like I did above and maybe do 10 burpees at a time. Focus on these small steps and understand that it’s going to suck….and if you get to the point of wanting to quit, shout out one of the Mantras!!!YOU ARE 20 times more capable than you think you are, now go out and prove it to yourself!!
