Hello friends, once again we prepare to launch into another great weekend of racing action here in Canada and abroad. I cannot believe how fast the last few weeks have literally flown by and I am super pumped that we are finally at the time of the year we all have looked forward to. Quite simply put, nothing in life makes me happier than rolling into the Motocross track and sharing this bond that unites us. I had a great experience this past weekend at Whispering Pines in Kamloops in the tower announcing round one of the Canadian Kawasaki Future West Moto South Series. I had a few words on the Future West race in Chris’s Monday Gate Drop and hopefully you have all had a chance to read that. The track was in the best shape I have ever seen it, and the crew there are to be commended. My little buddy Kyle Beaton rode like the champ that he has always been and I can’t say enough how good that felt to witness. Yes, Ryan Lockahart won the races, but as I often say, winning is not the only victories this sport can provide us.

The series out west continues this weekend at the well primed Kelowna Dirt Bike Club and we are expecting temperatures of 20 degrees Celsius. I know some people have balked at the new race format of practice on Saturday and racing on Sunday, but let me tell you what I have seen with this format. Saturday, being practice day that sees bikes hit the track around 9:30-10:00am, allows riders to show up a little bit later compared to a race day situation, and things are a lot less rushed. This format gives the riders a chance to get comfortable with the track, and when the gate drops the following day they are most often race ready. We talk about safety and what we can do to keep riders safe and healthy. This sure helps in my opinion. For the first race of the year at Kamloops we had only one collarbone issue. Pretty darn good, as from my vantage point the track was very rough and gnarly like a Motocross track should be. I think we are on the right track here, and with the proper combination of safety equipment, schooling and seat time we are doing everything possible to keep our riders safe. One of the best ways to grow, promote and ensure the longevity of the sport is to do our best to keep the riders we now have safe and coming back. The club in Kamloops along with Future West have been open minded and have taken a lot into to consideration from those on the track and made any necessary changes.

Amateur Motocross Ontario kicks off this weekend at Gopher Dunes. As much as I am looking forward to round two of our series in BC, I will be following the progress of the new-look Ontario scene. If you are reading this and are going to Gopher Dunes, there is something you can do to help me follow the race. Take out your phone, snap a picture or short video, and Instagram it or tweet it #Motocross #CMRC #MXPmag. We are on instagram as @mxpmag, @cmrcmx, @canadianmotoshow. I will look for you great images. You might think – not a big deal, whatever, but do not ever undersell the value moving forward of what positive promotion of our Canadian Motocross scene can spin itself into. Be a promoter! Not only for yourself, but the sport as well as your sponsors. We are all in this together so let’s do our best to make it not just good but great. Good luck to all out there. If I had one wish granted it would be able to ‘Double Heel Click’ my Ruby Red Gaernes like Marvin Musquin and be in two spots at once. Let’s just say my ‘Heel Clicking’ needs some work so I am relying on you; no pressure now, (insert smiles and laughter).

I have also been paying close attention to the progress of our amateur national venues as I am very much looking forward to those events. They are important on so many levels and are a true yard stick of one’s progress. The results from those events look very good on the resume. A lot of people that support this industry and put those events on are working as I type to make this year’s WCAN, ECAN and Trans Can the best amateur events on Canadian soil of the year. Let’s get out to the Amateur National qualifiers, which start this weekend, and get those dates on our calendars. The sign up for those events is a little bit more money, but let me tell you from experience, when you weigh your dollars to doughnuts those events deliver more bang for the buck than you can imagine. If you have attended before, you know what I am talking about. If you have been and know a racer or friend that has not, ask him or her if they are going, and encourage them. I have been speaking with a lot of riders on my Canadian Moto Show about these events and it always amazes me how when I mention their accomplishments at these races how they come alive. I truly believe that many of our current top riders have had some of their most memorable experiences at these events in their formative years.

This weekend the Supercross Series, which had its title winners crowned this past weekend in Houston in the Lites West as well as the Supercross class, continues. Congratulations to Cooper Webb and Ryan Dungey and their connections as they are full value for their efforts and are true champions. Cooper Webb was a cut above the rest in the Lites West, and I cannot say enough how nice it was to see Ryan Dungey shake some of his critics with this season’s performance. Yes, there may still be a few critics but I guess that is just human nature. Either way I am sure Ryan is happy. This weekend’s event is in Santa Clara, California and it is pretty much a home race for Adam ‘The Seven Deuce Deuce’ Enticknap. All the best this weekend to the Cycle North Honda rider and all other competitors as that series winds down. There is a great article about Adam in the current issue of Motocross Performance Magazine by myself and Chris Pomeroy.

The final ‘Friday Flight’ note goes to the province of Trentino in Italy where the World Motocross Championship resumes very early Sunday morning our time. Now that the series is through three rounds and has made it back to Europe, I look for things to heat up in the MX-GP class title chase quickly. This picturesque venue, which will be jammed packed by many thousands of the most ravenous race fans in the world, promises to be a good one. Eight-time world champion Red Bull KTM’s Antonio Cairoli is the homeland’s prodigal son, and as I said, if a heel click could get me in I would be there. Monster Energy Kawasaki rider Ryan Villopoto, who only hit his best stride once so far in the series, should feel somewhat at home on the hard packed surface. Right now, Rockstar Energy Drink rider Clement DeSalle, on the effort of his first 25 point count with a Moto win and the overall in Argentina, currently holds the conch of consistency and the red plate. Max Nagl and his Husqvarna have also made the early season quest for the title interesting, and what looks to be, at present, a four man race. With 30 Motos remaining in this series anything is possible. I will have my alarm set and be up at 3:00am getting all the action I can before I head over to the Kelowna track to announce Sunday’s action.

Wherever you get to this weekend friends, do your best to stay safe and let’s keep that Moto passion pinned by sharing with us some of those great social media images. Let’s Go Racing.

Until next ‘Friday Flight’ Brent ‘Airmail’ Worrall out.
