When Tyler Medgalia lines up on the starting line next weekend in Nanaimo, BC, he will have raced a National on every major brand of dirt bike, and in the process his legacy will continue as one of Canada’s hardest working riders.
These days Tyler is a long way from his Kemptville, Ontario roots. He now resides in Nova Scotia. When he is not on the bike, he is at home being a father to his wonderful son, Talon. At 26 years-old, it’s no surprise that Tyler has matured into the man he is today. With this maturity comes the realization that his life off the bike is more important than his life on it. Maybe this is why Tyler is such a favourite among the well educated Canadian Motocross fans. When he is on the track he gives it everything he has, but when he is off the track he lives a quiet life that fans can relate to. Win or lose, Tyler usually has the longest autograph line in the pits.
Tyler’s success hasn’t come without a lot of sacrifices along the way in the form of injuries. In the off-season, following his big win in the Intermediate class at the 2003 Parts Canada TransCan, Tyler had a serious crash while training down in Florida and ended up breaking his back. With a long road to recovery ahead of him, Tyler took things day by day and relied on the strong work ethic that his parents instilled in him since birth. Tyler not only recovered from his broken back, but he has gone on to win two Canadian MX2 Championships and cement himself as one of Canada’s top riders.
Heading into the 2013 Monster Energy Motocross Nationals, Tyler will be riding for the powerful Red Bull Royal Distributing Fox KTM team and he couldn’t be more excited about it. “I will be honest with you; I haven’t felt this good heading into a season in a long time. My KTM is amazing, the team has worked hard, I have trained hard all winter, and we’re ready to put our KTMs on top. If I can build some momentum out west in the first four rounds, I should be in good shape for the eastern rounds when four of the five tracks will be sand.” With nothing to worry about this summer except racing and training, there is no doubt that fans will see an extremely focused Tyler Medaglia. This could bad news for the competition as Tyler has proven in the past that when he is focused and confident, he can win races.
When you take into consideration all that Tyler has been through and where he might be headed in the future, it’s no wonder Tyler is sitting at number four in our MXP Rankings. However, with a new bike, a new team and a clear state of mind for 2013, he may not be at number four for long.
