For the next month we’re going to take a look at a few of the different regions across this great Country of ours. From Coast to Coast there are countless volunteers who give their time to help make motocross happen in Canada. To begin, we head out West to hear from Stu McQueen and what’s in store for BC Motocross in 2016.
Hey B.C. Race Fans!
I have spent many years in this sport, and for me, my involvement after racing started with a desire to improve track quality for riders by jumping in the equipment. With two kids racing, I believed this was the start of bringing more riders to the track – groomed and watered practices and events! Seems like a simple concept but in the first season as Vice President of the Kelowna Dirt Bike Club, groomed and watered practices and events brought the club from 35ish members to an astounding 300+ in a season! The Kelowna Club continues to groom and water for most practices and events, and is well known as a great spot for B.C. riders to get some seat time. As time went on I ended up getting involved in the promotions end of things while continuing to work the equipment and oversee track quality for events, to the extent of looking after a few of the tracks in the western rounds of CMRC’s Rockstar Energy Drink MX Nationals.
Over the last 25 years I have seen promoting bodies come and go, and I believe there to be a couple reasons behind this. In my opinion, many of these bodies have not ensured financial viability and in turn were not capable of providing a service that would keep riders and tracks content.
In 2015, when I made a decision as GM of Future West to go with CMRC in southern B.C., I started to work with other CMRC affiliated promoters in the province and we were able to bring a series to B.C. that saw record numbers. The results of working together under one banner to fill gates! This year, MCQMX will continue with that vision for the North and the South mainland as well as partner with VIMX on the Island in an effort to continue to fill gates and grow the sport of Motocross under that same banner.
Our objective is to work with the tracks so that they as clubs are successful, gain new riders, give the very best exposure back to the sponsors and industry for their support, and bring competitive but safe racing to Motocross in B.C. MCQMX will accommodate entry level riders with classes like ‘new kid beginner’ and when those ‘new kids’ get really fast and want to try to qualify for their first Pro National, we are simply a stepping stone to where they will end up, the only recognized Pro National Series with CMRC. The days of many sanctioning and promoting bodies have negatively affected the sport of motocross in B.C. for years. In my experience, working under a national banner, the benefits of having a rulebook, memberships and the data required, additional insurance, people and resources to answer questions, etc., have far outweighed any negatives I have seen. At the end of day I know where to send our fastest riders.
MCQMX is excited to have released the best schedule BC Motocross has seen in years. We have united tracks from Terrace in Northern B.C. to the ever popular Whispering Pines Raceway in Kamloops, and we didn’t stop at that. Spring of 2016 will see three crossover rounds where North riders will compete with South riders for points in both series. Then after a short summer break, B.C. riders will return for our three round B.C. Championships. All B.C. tracks have joined in this vision to see all riders in the province attend MCQMX events sanctioned by CMRC.
Looking forward to a record year in B.C.!!
See you at the races.
