Moving Forward

While everyone is pumped to be getting on their dirt bikes and racing these past few weeks, I can finally say I am officially enrolled in University this fall. The University of Alberta is where I am headed and I couldn’t be more excited to begin the next chapter in my life. With that being said, the journey to get to this point in my life has been a long one, so actually saying I have gotten to this point is a huge step in the right direction.

After I graduated from High School in May of 2015, the plan was to head to university in the fall. However, I was still awaiting to get back surgery by the end of the summer so I had to make the challenging decision of taking a year off. This was a hard pill to swallow as all of my friends were headed off to university. I felt like I was going backwards after all the hard work I had put into my recovery since my accident in 2013. When I finally got into surgery in October to remove the hardware that was put into my back after my accident, I began the long dreaded recovery while friends were off beginning a new chapter in their lives.

If I am going to be honest here, the past two and a half years have been a steady climb to getting back to my “normal.” I have had to overcome many challenges; many wouldn’t even consider having to deal with after sustaining a spinal cord injury. The challenges go anywhere from dealing with bowel and bladder issues, pain management in my back, to the expected challenges of dealing with the loss of limb function. The factor of dealing with paralysis and not being able to walk again wasn’t the hardest to overcome, it was more that I couldn’t continue playing soccer into University and that I wouldn’t be able to race anymore. However, as most of you know, I found a way to continue to ride and still get that adrenaline rush all motocrossers thrive for. That clearly hasn’t been enough though, as it still isn’t easy to see all my friends and family continue along with the sport while I am on the sidelines because of motocross. It definitely has been something I have had to work on and I’ve had to train myself to see the positives out of the situation I have been granted. As stated above, this journey has been a long one.

Now the good news for anyone reading this and needing some motivation out of my story. I have survived all these challenges and still can get up every day and be thankful for what I have in life. I may not be at my “normal” anymore, but I am working towards a new me, a much better me. Being a part of the Canadian Women’s Motocross National Series has definitely allowed me to continue to feel part of the motocross community. Enrolling in courses for this fall at the University of Alberta is another weight off my shoulders and something I can look forward to for the next few years as well. If I could give advice to new families getting involved with the sport of motocross or any sport in general, it is to make sure your kids continue to get their education and aren’t just putting everything into moto. Anything can happen in this sport and in our lives, so having the life skills outside of motocross is extremely important. If you don’t want to set your kids up for failure, I couldn’t emphasize this enough. Matt Koeleman nailed this in his new documentary “Against All Odds” so if you haven’t seen it, I suggest you watch it

Ride like a Girl Program: The Canadian Women’s National Motocross Series Renews Involvement for Second Year

Cornwall, ON (March 29, 2016) – Laminacorr Racing is thrilled to announce their collaboration with The Canadian Women’s National Motocross Series (WMX) for a second year.

The WMX Series is an eight round series that consists of two distinct championships. In total, there are four Western rounds and four Eastern rounds that are run across Canada from Kamloops, BC to Ulverton, QC. At the end of each of the four rounds a Western and Eastern National champion is crowned. While both series are sanctioned by the Canadian Motosport Racing Corp. (CMRC), they are being organized and promoted by a dedicated group of retired and current women’s motocross racers.

The WMX races are held in conjunction with the men’s Pro-motocross nationals. They are professional but friendly races open to girls and women aged 12 years old and older, on motorcycles 85cc and up. Current Eastern Champion, Eve Brodeur, and Western Champion, Sara King, will defend their title this season. Racers in the main women’s class across both Eastern and Western championships will benefit from the ‘Ride like a Girl’ contingency program, with a $200 purse to be share among the top three finishers at each race. It is expected that with additional visibility and funding from the ‘Ride like a Girl’ program, more women will come out and compete.
