CDNWMX Riding Schools Continue

After a lot of rain and snow in Saskatchewan, Denaye Arnett and Kennedy Lutz weren’t sure if they would be able to run the riding school that was planned for May 14th. However, with a little luck and Dean Murphy from the Regina Motocross Club, it sounded like it was a huge success.

Here is what Denaye had to say. “We had a great day in Regina for our CDNWMX motocross school. Thirteen women signed up and all went home with some new knowledge. We can’t thank Dean Murphy from the Regina Motocross Club enough for going out this morning to prep the track for us! Amazing track. Can’t wait to see the Women’s National here in June.”

I am so happy to hear everything turned out and have heard nothing but good things from the riders. I can confidently say we will be continuing these schools in the future for our sport. I think it is awesome to see so many women giving back and leading the path for future generations. I mean, Denaye stepped away from racing and organizing, yet we still see her out there helping out, pregnant and all! I guess we will have to keep our fingers crossed that she brings a future women’s champion into the world soon. Thanks again Denaye and Kennedy!

I also received word this past weekend that we have two off-road ladies that will be doing the full women’s circuit. Lexi Pechout and Shelby Turner will be attending all four western rounds and will definitely be top 5 contenders overall. I think with the amount of talent going into the series, it will be hard to make any kind of predictions on who will be in the top 10, which, as we all know, will make for some awesome racing this summer. I chatted with Shelby Turner, former CMRC Western Canadian Women’s National Champion, about her comeback for the 2016 series.

SR: Hey, can you tell the world who you are, how long have you have been racing, and how you got into the sport?

My name is Shelby Turner, I have been racing for about 16 years. I got into the sport through my parents. My Dad and Mom got big into the racing scene, and took my older brother and I around to all of the races at a young age. It didn’t take long for me to decide I wanted to be a racer when I grew up.

SR: For those who don’t know you, can you tell them how your season in 2015 went? What you were up to?

In 2015, I primarily focused on the AMA Endurocross Series in the States. After a tough year of battling elements and obstacles, I ended up 4th overall. Through points and invite standings, I got myself an exciting chance to participate in the XGames for the third time. I ended up 6th overall last year, one of my better finishes at XGames. When I wasn’t busy racing in the States, I filled my time participating in local events around Alberta. I finished 2nd in the AMSA Off-Road Women’s class. Not bad for missing rounds due to endurocross.

SR: What have you been up to since last summer and what are the plans for the rest of this year?

Since last summer I have been training and fundraising to race the ISDE (International Six Days of Enduro) in Spain. I competed in this event twice before, bringing home Canada’s first female gold medal in Italy and Canada’s first women’s team silver medal in Argentina. My teammates this year are Félicia Robichaud, and Megan Griffith. I am also going to participate in the AMA Endurocross Series and do the full CMRC Western Canadian Women’s National series.

SR: Why did you decide to “come back” to ride the full series this year? What is the goal with attending all four rounds? When was the last time you raced the full series?

It wasn’t really a decision; the reason I left was because it conflicted with XGames. This year the XGames event I participated in got cut. I have always enjoyed the Western Nationals, and wish I could have done both. My goal is to be top 3; lots of fast ladies out there. The last time I raced the full series was 2013.

SR: Do you have any life plans/goals you want to achieve in the next few years?

I am an EMT right now, and eventually I would like to become a paramedic. In the meantime, I want a few more ISDE Gold medals, an AMA championship, and maybe a few more CMRC Western Canadian Women’s Nationals championships.

SR: If you could give a new girl who is starting up in the racing world advice, what would it be?

Always have fun! It’s easy to learn when you’re enjoying yourself.

SR: Is there anyone you would like to thank?

A&E Racing, Laminacorr Racing, FXR, KTM Canada, Vee Rubber tires, Alpinestars, Arai helmets, Scott goggles, M7 graphics, ACF50, Matrix concepts, Atlas bracing, Motovan, Moterex, BRP, SRT, Mongoose, and my family and friends for the years of support!

Also if anyone wants to support the ISDE Women’s World Enduro Team, please let me know!
