Sliding Doors With Sierra Roth- Calgary Recap

sierra roth

Another week has gone by and there’s yet another points leader heading into the final round. Calgary saw some new girls on the line with a total of 33 riders, as well as a mix up in the points. The weather turned out way better than the forecast called for and a huge improvement from past years. The day couldn’t have gone any smoother, well, besides some protesting and a few riders taking some dirt samples. The day was interesting to say the least, so let’s get right into it.

Our moto one board guy, Keylan Meston, walked across the line as Shawn Maffenbeier held the 30 second board; can’t thank the pros enough for helping us out! Our RTR Performance Holeshot winner went out to Shelby Turner (#50), who was just barely able to snag the holeshot from Jamie Burmey (#447), a surprise top 5 threat from Manitoba.

Shelby Turner was able to keep the lead throughout the entire moto and didn’t look back. Lexi Pechout (#151) said her start wasn’t very strong in the first moto, but was able to push through and keep in close distance of Turner. Her jumping confidence is lacking, especially after a nasty spill in Nanaimo, but will keep pushing with her corner speed. Our points leader, Sara King (#1W), had an unusual bad start, so she had to make ground throughout the entire moto, which only allowed her to get herself back up to third place. Jamie Burmey (#447) was our wild card for Calgary, who we knew would be a top 5 threat. She proved our assumption right when she almost holeshotted the first moto. She stayed in 4th for most of the moto and just tried to stay on two wheels, as she said she isn’t used to 15 minutes plus one lap motos. Dominique Daffe (#5) rode what we thought was a solid moto, but she said she was really tight and hoped to relax a little more in the second moto. Brittany Danyluk (#3) would end up in 6th in moto one, a result she wasn’t happy with. Courtney Stelter (#30) rode a solid moto and gave herself 7th in moto one. Madi Watt (#7) also rode solid and consistent after she put in a good start. Her efforts would give her 8th. Kate Lees (#9) said she had a mid-pack start that she had to make her way through the pack. She finally got herself into 8th, but got held up with a lapper, which put her back into 9th. Tamala Whiteside (#11) would put a solid moto in and was able to finally break the top 10. Danika White (#10) and Kristin Tse (#138), usual top 10 riders, would just miss the top ten this moto and ended with 11th and 12th respectively. Oriana Fraser (#49) and Jamie Munro (#6) both had unfortunate luck that would sadly leave them both getting carted off by medics. A few protests with riders possibly jumping/passing on the yellow flags after the first moto, which none went through for anyone wondering, and had a few girls ready to prove themselves in the second moto.

Moto 2 brought Michael Dasilva and Dylan Kaelin out for the moto two and thirty second boards. The RTR Performance Holeshot winner in the second moto went to Shelby Turner again, who had a wicked jump. Shelby kept the lead and would end the day all smiles. She mentioned the ruts and lappers made things difficult, so Lexi Pechout was able to stay in close distance and put pressure on her. However, with Lexi not jumping, Turner would have the edge on her. Shelby and Lexi are both going into Regina not changing much. Shelby will now have a 9 point lead on our #1 plate holder, Sara King. King put in a solid start, but would find herself on the ground on the second lap in

a corner. King would lose a few positions that forced her to have to make up ground to 3rd place, leaving her with third overall for the day. She will be headed into Regina with her head down, ready to chase the title again for a second year. Anything is possible, right? Dominique Daffe would end up 4th overall as she pushed through the second moto, battling it out with Brittany Danyluk. Brittany finished with a 5th the second moto, giving herself 6th overall, something she hopes to improve on in Regina. Our wild card, Jamie Burmey, had another good start but cross rutted in moto two, hitting Dominique and losing a few positions. She was only able to salvage a 6th, giving her 5th overall for the day. Madi Watt again put in a solid moto, one of her best, consistent weekends yet that gave her 7th overall for the day. Tamala Whiteside put in her best finish in the second moto with 8th, giving her 8th overall for the day. Courtney Stelter would ride smooth all race but ended up soil sampling on the last lap, salvaging 11th and giving her 9th overall. Danika White would end up 9th for 10th overall. Kristin Tse was not happy with her weekend, and would finish 10th for 11th overall. Kate Lees, who put in an awesome start, fell over, made her way through the pack again and then ended up getting docked for jumping on a yellow flag, which gave her 14th for 12th overall.

Jamie Routley was our Gibson Tyre Hard Charger Award winner who has been pushing to hit the top 10 every weekend, but just hasn’t got there yet. With some good starts and a little bit of luck on her side, we think we will be seeing her as a top 10 threat at the last round. With the improvements she has made in the last year, she will be a future threat at every round in later years.

A shout out to Jamie Munro and Oriana Fraser who both crashed in the first moto in Calgary. Jamie walked away with many bruises and a severe concussion and Oriana also has many bruises to heal from. We wish you both all the best in your recovery!

These girls have surprised us time and time again, which doesn’t make our job easy on selecting the Athlete of the Year Award that will be awarded in Regina. Our Cycle North Most Improved Rider Award will also be a challenge, as there are quite a few ladies who have stepped it up this year. With the points still really close amongst the top 10 and rain in the forecast again, it will be interesting to see what plays out in Regina, Saskatchewan this weekend.
