MXP: Hey Newf! We hope your week is going well. The first question concerns last weekend’s Philadelphia SX and the performance of young Cole Davies. When you factor in his Jett Lawrence-like technique, calm demeanour, and now his results, is he the best 250SX rider on the planet right now?
RL: I don’t think I’m ready to call Cole the best yet, but it’s getting close. It’s hard to believe that he’s only 17 as he rides with such smoothness and composure. Last year, he was okay in the Futures SX races, but he didn’t ride well enough to make us think he was capable of what we’re witnessing this season. I heard he’s much further along in his SX development, so it will be interesting to see how he does this summer in the Pro Motocross Championships.

MXP: The gate is about to drop on the Canadian moto race season. This coming weekend is the opening AMO OPC race at Gopher Dunes, next weekend Future West MX gets going. This is an exciting time for everyone in Canada. You’ve obviously been a part of a lot of opening days in your career, what are some memories that jump at you when you think about racing for the first time in a new season?
RL: As you said, the first race of the season is always exciting and full of nerves, regardless of what class you ride. I mean, even the pro riders are anxious for the first gate drop of the year. I remember sometimes starting the season much earlier than we seem to now, so there was always a chance of cold weather and even snow. Hopefully, the weather is good on Sunday for the AMO race at Gopher Dunes as I’m sure there will be a massive turnout. Here in BC, next weekend is looking great and I’m sure we will see over 500 entries, which is amazing for Future West MX.

MXP: Last week, you mentioned that one of the things you did at the Foxborough SX was hang out with Mike Treadwell. Now, we’re sure that we could spend hours telling funny Mike Treadwell stories from over the years. When you think of Treadwell, what stands out to you?
RL: Mike Treadwell is one of the best humans I know. From the first time I met him, he was just so genuine and nice to me. He taught me a lot about racing, training, and to be a good pro rider. Also, he knew just when to say certain helpful things, and he always led by example. Mike wasn’t the most talented rider, but he was one of the hardest-working riders I’ve ever seen, and he never gave up. It was great to see him and his family in Foxborough, and I look forward to the next time we can hang out.
