The Monday Gate Drop Presented By Yamaha Motor Canada

Greetings everyone! It’s the second to last Monday of February, and in certain parts of Canada, today is Family Day. Family Day began in Ontario back in 2008 and for most, it’s a statutory holiday. I’m honestly not sure why this day was created, but it does give everyone a nice break in February, and a great opportunity to spend time with friends and family. After spending all day Friday at the Toronto Motorcycle Show, my family and I drove two hours north of our home to Huntsville, Ontario for a hockey tournament. I’ve never been to Huntsville before, it seemed nice and I’m guessing that it would be a great place to spend some time in the summer.

The Triple Crown Series had a massive display at the Toronto Motorcycle Show.

As I mentioned above, on Friday I headed down to the Toronto Motorcycle Show to take in the sights and talk to some people that I haven’t seen in a few months. Going back to my childhood, I’ve always loved Motorcycle Shows. When I was a child my Dad would always take me so we could see the new bikes, as well as all of the displays. Obviously, in those days there wasn’t Social Media or any Canadian moto media, so the first time we were able to see the new models was at these shows. Friday was fun as all of the OEM’s had their new models on display, and even Triumph had their brand new 250F there for everyone to see. There was also a plethora of industry people on hand to chat with so, it was a busy day of catching up. The Triple Crown Series crew, had a massive display in the back corner of the show, which was very cool to see. Dylan Wright was also there on Friday and Saturday to sign autographs and mingle with his fans. Jess Pettis flew in for just Saturday, so I wasn’t able to see him. However, Dylan is doing well and he told us that his first few weeks in Florida have been a success. He also mentioned, that since he trained very hard during the off-season, he’s been able to jump right into long motos down south. We were able to grab Dylan for a few minutes for a video interview so, look for that tomorrow on the website. It was a fun day, and it was great to see so many of my industry friends and colleagues.

The final weekend of the 2024 Rimbey AX was another great success. One of the young riders who stood out was Meston Lockhart, who rode well and finished on the podium.

Out in Alberta the final two rounds of the Rimbey AX took place and once again young Blake Davies was the rider to beat in the Pro class. In just two years this event has grown into something very special, and as I mentioned last week, great things happen when you’re able to get an entire community behind an event. We will certainly be asking Ryan Lockhart about it this on Friday in his Matrix Concepts Canada 3 Q’s column. So, the second annual Rimbey AX is now part of Canadian motocross folklore, and now we will look forward to next year’s event.

This coming weekend the 2024 Monster Energy Supercross Series returns for Round 7 in Arlington. We’re almost to the halfway point of the series, and I dont think anyone can predict yet who has the best shot at the 450SX Championship. Jett Lawrence will carry the red plates into Big D, but he has several riders nipping at his heels. From Arlington, the series then moves to the most challenging race at the Daytona SX. As we all know, Daytona has been Eli Tomac’s favourite race for several years now. I don’t think he’s been in a must-win situation as much as he will be next weekend. I’m willing to bet that having this past weekend off has benefited Tomac greatly, as he was able to reset, and work on some areas of his riding that haven’t been the greatest recently. Also, the 250SX East Series resumes this weekend, so that is going to be fun to watch. The track design for Round 7 looks fairly simple. However, the start and first turn appear to be an exact replica of the one in Detroit, and we all know what happened in turn one of the 250SX East main event. On a side note, my family and I are headed to Florida on Feb 28th so we’ll be attending the Daytona SX. I haven’t been there since the last time I raced it in 1998, so I’m very excited to head back to the most famous speedway on the planet.

Well, that is it for me this week. I hope everyone has a great week and also an awesome Family Day. I know this week’s column is a little short, but please stay tuned for more news throughout the week. On Sunday, I’m flying to Gainesville, Florida for the Triumph TF 250-X media launch and ride day. We will be riding this new bike a week today at the famous Gatorback Cycle Park, so you will soon know all about the all-new Triumph TF 250-X. Have a great week and thank you for reading!
