Winter’s back!!! We woke up this morning to a winter wonderland – so depressing! Hard to believe that I have sunburn on my arms from the weekend, and today the winter boots were back on. Hopefully this is the last of winter.
This past weekend was one of the most exhausting weekends of our lives. We had been planning our trip to the Loretta Lynn’s area qualifier in Fredericksburg, PA for a few weeks. However, Justin is so busy with work these days that we weren’t sure if it was even possible to go. We decided at the last minute to just skip the practice day and head down and race only. I felt bad for Preston, he was going into the race with a disadvantage right off the bat. All the other kids knew the track and were able to practice. He was all for it though, so we hopped in the truck and left Brantford around 9pm on Friday night.
We drove straight through the night. We stopped once and slept for an hour before hitting the road again. It was so hard, I don’t know how Justin did it. We arrived at the track around 7am, the kids were wide awake and full of energy. Justin and I were like a pair of dying ducks. It had poured the night before so the track was pretty rough. The practice was really tough. This was only the second time Preston had ridden outdoors this year. A muddy outdoor track is the complete opposite of riding indoors all winter. For one, it was 6 laps at around 2 minutes per lap compared to 6 laps at 35 seconds a lap, and for two, it was almost 30 degrees; we’re used to -30.
Preston rode great considering he hadn’t had much practice outdoors at all. There were a few national riders at the race; all the kids were super fast. He definitely needs more practice but he did qualify for the regionals. The regional qualifier is the next step to Loretta Lynn’s. We were so proud of him. It was a very tough race with the driving over night, missing practice, mud up to the pegs and fast kids, but he got it done. It was definitely worth the drive.
As soon as racing was over we were back in the truck to head home. We left Pennsylvania at 5:30pm; by 8:30pm Justin was falling asleep so I took over. We switched back and forth, trying to get home as fast as possible. Around 11pm we were both so tired, and about an hour away from the border. We decided to pull into a parking lot of a very small town and take a nap. After 30 minutes we were woken up by the county sheriff knocking on our window. I guess we looked suspicious with bikes in the back of the truck. He left saying, “I’m glad you guys pulled over to take a nap instead of me finding you in a ditch.” It was pretty funny. After that we were wide awake. Justin made it to about Grimsby before he was falling asleep again. I took over and drove the rest of the way. It was after 3am when we got home and of course the kids were wide awake and wanted to stay up. I can honestly say that I’ve never been so tired in my life. Hard to believe we were out of the house for only 30 hours.
I’m so glad that I have started writing these blogs. One day we will look back and laugh at how crazy our life was. Thanks again to everyone who reads these. You all probably laugh already at how crazy our life is. Thanks to MXP for publishing. Hope you all have a great Easter Weekend and that the bunny is good to you.
