For this week’s Yamaha Motor Canada Ltd. Amateur Profile we travel all the way out west to beautiful Langley, BC. There we find Darrin Thoring who is a fast, up and coming, hard-working Junior rider who has been training all winter to be ready for 2015. Let’s have a look at Darrin and find out what makes him tick.
MXP: How are you Darrin? Can we start off by you giving us your age and where you and your family call home?
DT: I am doing great Chris, thanks for calling. Currently I’m 15-years-old and we live in Langley BC.
That’s a nice area of BC. How long have you lived there?
I have lived in Langley my entire life.
What class will you be riding in 2015 and how long have you been riding?
I am currently riding the MX2 & MX3 Junior classes and so far it’s been going good. I started racing a KTM 50 at 7-years-old, so I’ve been riding almost 8 years now.

15 year old Darrin Thoring is one of the fast up and coming BC riders who is looking to have a very successful 2015.
You were fairly young when you started riding, that’s awesome. These days everyone is training hard it seems, even young kids like you. Did you do a lot of training during the off-season to prepare for 2015?
Yes I did actually. I work with Kyle Beaton to improve my fitness and strength. He had me on a tough program but so far I feel great on the bike so it obviously paid off.
It’s great to see a great guy like Beets training all you kids out there. It sounds like he’s doing an excellent job. Can you tell us about some of your past racing highlights?
Sure, in 2014 I finished first in the Schoolboy class in the Future West Series. Then in the 2013 BC Provincials I finished third, and finally in the Gentle Bella BC Championships I finished second overall in the Super Mini and 85cc 12-16 class.
It sounds as though you’ve been putting some pretty good race results together. Have you found a track yet that you’d call your favourite?
Actually yes I have, it’s called Horn Rapids. I was down there over spring break riding. The track is sweet, so flowing and smooth. We had a great time down there and I can’t wait to go back.
I would imagine you and your trainer Beets have set some goals for this season. How would you like to see your 2015 go?
Yes we have, for this year I would like to podium in both my Junior classes. I think if I could do that then it would be a great season.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given so far in racing and who gave it to you?
I’ve been giving so much good advice over the years it’s hard to just name one.
Do you like music Darrin? What is your favourite music?
I love music! I listen to a lot of rap music, I find it motivates me.
Your poor parents (laughs). What are you usually thinking about while the thirty second board is up?
I am always thinking about just trying to get a good start, survive the first corner and then start charging.
I like those thoughts, good work. What is your video game of choice?
I would say GTA and MX VS ATV Reflex, those two are my favourites.
Does everyone at your school know you race dirt bikes?
I’m not sure if everyone does, most of my teachers do and my close friends for sure, so I guess that’s all that matters.
What is your favourite subject at school?
I really love auto shop, for sure. My project this year is rebuilding a three wheeler so it’s been awesome.
What is your favourite thing to do other than ride a dirt bike?
I like dirt jumping, playing football and of course video games.
Well Darrin, thank you for doing this. Here is your final question. Who would you like to thank?
I would like to thank Dan Reynolds, Holeshot Moto Sports, Gerald Heinrichs, Big Steel Box, Ryan Lockhart, Atlas, 100%, KBR MX Training, Rod Matechuck, RMR Suspension, Kyle VanDyken School of Motocross, my Grandma & Grandpa and of course my Mom and Dad.
