As the 2019 Monster Energy Supercross Series arrived at Lucas Oil Stadium in downtown Indianapolis for Round 11, all eyes were on the two winners from the previous weekend in Daytona. Kawasaki riders Austin Forkner and Eli Tomac had both dominated the technical Daytona track and looked to continue that high level of riding in Indianapolis.
For Forkner, his plans worked out perfectly as he grabbed the early lead in the 250SX East main event and never looked back. Up to this point, Forkner’s riding in 2019 has really been on another level compared to his competition. If you look closely, you can see him doing things on the track that no one else is doing. From the moment the gate drops, Forkner is just flat out charging from one corner to the next, and his ability to consistently put in fast laps without mistakes is quite remarkable. Forkner and his Damon Bradshaw-like swagger that he brings to each weekend is definitely a breath of fresh air.
In the 450SX class, things didn’t quite work out the same for Eli Tomac. After a second place start in the main event, Tomac appeared to struggle during the opening laps and was unable to make a pass for the lead. Whether this frustrated Tomac or not we’ll never know but he clearly wasn’t riding on the same level as the week before, and by the end of the race he had slipped back to fourth. KTM rider Marvin Musquin rode strong up front as he held off Cooper Webb and Blake Baggett to take his first main event win of the season. Although this was Musquin’s first win, it wasn’t the first time these three KTM riders occupied the 450SX podium at the end of a hard night of racing. With just six rounds remaining in the series, Webb still holds the red plate with a 14-point lead over his teammate Musquin. Before we move on to Round 12 in Seattle this weekend, let’s look back at some incredible Matt Wellumson photos from Indianapolis.
