A Fun Day At The Grand Prix de Snow Presented by Husqvarna Canada

Last Sunday, the Grand Prix De Snow took place 45 minutes West of Toronto in Campbellville, Ontario. The event has been running for many years now and is put together by Lawrence Hacking, along with the sponsors Husqvarna and Town Moto. Essentially, the GP De Snow consists of a snow covered grass track where riders gather to have a fun day of friendly competition, good food and a chance to test the 2019 Husqvarna enduro models. From the moment you arrive, you could tell it was going to be a great day. The participants spirits were high given that this was their first chance of 2019 to swing a leg over a motorcycle and let loose.

The demo bikes were kitted out with studded tires, a luxury that riders who brought their own bikes could not have. I’m not sure if this was for the safety factor or just a very smart marketing move, but I do know the studs gave you the opportunity to find some sort of traction in the slickest conditions. Initially, the track was covered in deep snow making the lap difficult for the best of us. Jack-knifing was a given, and falling – well, you couldn’t avoid it! As more riders set out, the track started to get better and better.

Eventually, the course had turned into a rutted paradise. As the snow was pushed away and the frozen ground appeared, the studs started working like a dream. Suspension tests are irrelevant in these type of conditions but with such a slick surface the characteristics of each motor seemed to be exaggerated.

Right off the bat, people were avoiding the small motors and opting for the bigger 350 and 501 models. The smooth, linear power allowed you to stay in control on the ice and track almost everywhere with minimal effort. On the opposite side of the spectrum, Husqvarna also had their TE150 available. This bike was modified with a lowering link allowing beginner/shorter riders to enjoy the day as well. I’m not sure if I fall into either of those categories but man, was that bike ever fun! In traditional small bore fashion, the TE150 made you feel like a hero. It may have been hard to keep momentum, but the smile on my face stayed consistent.

Following the bike tests, the competitors enjoyed a barbeque and drinks before heading into their races. The GP offered a variety of classes suitable for all skill levels and bike sizes. Each class had awards presented by the events various sponsors at the end of it all. It was apparent that no matter the skill level, this event was based on one thing…Fun!

Lawrence Hacking and the crew did an amazing job once again with the Grand Prix De Snow. It’s the special kind of race where you will see beginners try a motorcycle for the first time, and pros enjoy a pressure free event. I hope this event can continue for years to come and with that, I hope you’ll make it out as well!
